T H E G Y P S Y T R A I L through a stage before I go on a trip where I get really stressed out about everything, unless I’m excited, like I know the surf is going to be great. I try to travel as minimally as possible and just take the things that will instantly make me feel at home—favorite clothes, notebooks, computer. I have a pretty set program most places I go in the world. In France I’ll stay with [Quiksilver Europe president] Pierre Agnes in his guest house, and that becomes my home for a month of the year. In Australia I have an apartment, and that becomes my base for a couple of months. I pretty much feel comfortable wherever I go in the world, even in landlocked Eastern European countries where people don’t speak a lot of English. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone because that’s when you learn things. On the tour, though, I want comfort, and thanks to a lot of good friends, I have it. I take a backpack for the plane, a ukulele, my check-in travel bag, and my board bag with six or seven boards. If I can get away with it, I’ll take only two or three boards because a lot of places I go I’ll have boards there already. The first things I pack are my journals, my computer, and my uke. 109 So many times I feel that I just don’t want to move. I go
