Innovate Magazine - Spring 2008 - (Page 38) choosing the proper finishing equipment CHOICE MAKING THE RIGHT I believe that the maximum flexibility in digital finishing is nearly always achieved by having equipment that operates off-line, although there can be exceptions, as in the case of a print business that has a very high percentage of its output devoted to one particular type of work. First, there is the obvious argument that any piece of off-line finishing equipment can take work from more than one print engine. It should also be remembered that where a finishing end is “bolted on” to a print engine, it can result in a reduction in the speed at which the engine can operate, whereas a print system unencumbered by a finishing backend can always work at maximum capacity. It is also worth bearing in mind that if either element in an online configuration should go down, the entire system is affected. If, on the other hand, one part of an off-line setup should malfunction, the other remains in production. The advantages of flexibility inherent in off-line finishing has been one of the major design considerations behind all the purpose-built digital finishing equipment that Morgana has designed and manufactured since the launch of the first AutoCreaser back in 2000. This piece of equipment has undergone many improvements and refinements since its introduction—culminating in the recently launched Mk III version—and it still epitomizes many of the qualities that are essential for successful finishing in the digital print sector. The AutoCreaser’s success has been based on the fact that it was the very first unit to provide a simple, fast, and automated method of creasing digital output before folding, but its speed of setup was, perhaps, the most important factor in its worldwide acceptance by digital printers. Speed and flexibility are paramount when selecting finishing equipment By Steve Enright he successful digital printer has to be able to respond quickly and positively to the needs of the on-demand market. Speed is paramount, with fast setup being more important than copies per hour or minute when short runs are concerned. Just as important is flexibility, with the printer needing to change from one type of work to another with minimum disruption and needing to handle all aspects of a job with the minimum of equipment. Innovate Spring 08 T Just as these virtues are incorporated in all the latest print engines, they must also be uppermost in the mind of the digital printer when it comes to choosing finishing equipment. The effects of a finishing “bottleneck” can be even more disastrous in the digital environment than in conventional printing. 38
