Innovate Magazine - Spring 2008 - (Page 39) To understand why, you need to look back at what the alternatives were before this essentially simple piece of equipment came onto the market. Effectively, if you needed to crease output before folding, you would have had to use a platen or cylinder press—equipment that needed a skilled operator and was totally out of place in the digital environment. Even worse were the difficulties involved in setting up, where the printer would be lucky to get away with “overs” of 70 percent or more. This, obviously, would take all, or nearly all, the profitability out of a short run job worked out on a click charge basis. People often comment on how small and insignificant a “wheel-it-where you-want” piece of kit like the AutoCreaser can look alongside one of today’s massive print engines, but when it comes to profitability, it more than punches its weight. The drive for greater flexibility and functionality was also behind the design of Morgana’s next big development— the DigiFold. This was the first unit to offer creasing and folding in a single pass and, as well as using the same blade and matrix creasing system as the AutoCreaser, it employed a new and patented folding method that eschewed the use of conventional buckle plates in order to further cut the risk of damage to delicate substrates. This emphasis on greater functionality has been carried through to other pieces of equipment that Morgana has designed for the on-demand market because, obviously, a unit that will perform two or more functions is going to save space, time, and manpower and ultimately make a significant contribution to profitability. Bookletmaking provides a good case in point, particularly now that most digital print engines offer multiple paper feeding and can print a complete job—covers and inside sheets—in one operation. This means that, more often than not, the cover will need creasing, a function that used to mean removing the sheets concerned, creasing them, and then re-collating the job prior to bookletmaking. It was to overcome this time-consuming operation that Morgana developed the DocuMaster, which is a complete finishing system that enables pre-collated work to be creased, folded, and stitched in one pass, thus halving the time needed if one had to use separate creasing and bookletmaking units. In the case of a simple 4pp booklet, the stitching heads can be bypassed and the work fed only to the crease, fold, and trimming units. Built-in perforating adds another layer of functionality, and there is a programming facility that enables repeat work to be stored for instant retrieval. This type of unit is versatile not only in the many different functions it performs, but also in the range of jobs it can handle. It will, for example, produce booklets in a wide range of different sizes and will handle weights up to 120lbs cover stock, while the thickness of the finished job may be anything from 4pp up to 88pp on lighter stock. Using the DocuMaster’s Square Back System (SBS), thicker books can be given a perfect-bound appearance. Effectively, if you needed to crease output before folding, you would have had to use a platen or cylinder press—equipment that needed a skilled operator and was totally out of place in the digital environment. One final point about choosing your digital finishing equipment—think in terms not only of what you need today, but what might be required months or years from now, when your business has grown. A range of equipment that offers a clearly defined upgrade path may well be instrumental in saving you money as well as shortening the learning curve when changing from one type of system to another.
