Innovate Magazine - Spring 2008 - (Page 41) THE RAPID GROWTH OF DIGITAL BOOK PRINTING WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR PUBLISHERS AND OFFSET BOOK PRINTERS? InterQuest has reported in a study of the market that they “expect digital volume in the book market to grow at about 16% annually and more than double in output by 2011.” This growth is happening in traditional books and non-traditional books. Publishers of traditional books see the advantage of saving inventory and shipping costs and the ability to test market books in much smaller runs. They also see the advantage of keeping a much wider back list in circulation. Since 1776, over 22 million books have been published in the US, but today only two million are in print. And while 150,000 new titles are being added each year, 100,000 go out of print each year. Even if the 45% of the market is dominated by five publishing conglomerates, the fastest growing area is small publishers and self publishers. There are 80,000 book publishers in total and 8,000 to 11,000 more added each year. Digital printing has also enabled the growth of non-traditional books like individualized photo albums, which is the fastest growing segment. It also includes scrapbooks and individualized educational compilations. Leading the Way in Automating Photo Album Production At the recent PMA show in Las Vegas, Ultimate launched the Impostrip Photo Printing Suite of tools for producing photo album books, calendars, and greeting cards. Ultimate also teamed up with DigiLabs and Duplo to show a hands-off production live workflow from web2print. Ultimate connection to DigiLabs takes album creation online to a new level where products prepared with DigiLabs are optimized and imposed automatically by Impostrip Photo Printing Suite, including the generation of barcode to drive the various Duplo finishing machines. Finishing Is the Key Digital presses have improved speed and quality so that they are a real competitor to offset for various kinds of work. But the key to making money is in the finishing automation. Many kinds of workflows can produce some kind of “cut and stack” production of books. The problem is the hours wasted in actually doing the cutting and stacking. With Impostrip Book Stacker, you can produce parallel book blocks on your digital press. You can also optimize the use of the sheet to put up as many blocks as possible to minimize clicks. The result is minimal cuts to separate the book blocks. Book Stacker also uses 3D optimization, so different length books can be produced side by side. Crossing the Finishing Line Impostrip Book Stacker offers tools to place barcode on the sheet to instruct a cutting machine to automatically cut the stacks. At Drupa, Ultimate will be introducing new versions of Impostrip Book Stacker and Impostrip On-Demand that fully automate orders from various store-front including IPLabs all the way to output JDF files with instructions to a variety of finishing equipment. efficient and was causing us to lose about 50 hours of production time a week. By using Impostrip Book Stacker, we were able to regain this lost production time. Our new application and workflow allows us to process PDF files to Impostrip Book Stacker so they can be imposed and sequenced based on page numbers and north/south orientation. This process allows us to reduce paper waste and the amount of time required in our bindery department. Book Stacker is able to process and impose very large PDF files. This result was critical to our workflow. Q Do you see your new workflow helping you expand business with your customers? A PrintManagement also develops customized web-to-print applications for customers. We are looking to leverage Impostrip Book Stacker to impose all of our web-to-print orders. Based on our current experience with Book Stacker, we feel it would be the right tool for imposing all of our web-to-print orders. Q Did you evaluate other solutions other than Book Stacker? A We looked at a couple other solutions, but the service and real partnership we received from your team while we were validating your software was key to our decision to purchase Impostrip Book Stacker. The software is working great with our application. Joanne David is Vice President of Ultimate Technographics Inc. For more information, visit www.imposition.com.
