Extremely pleased with the performance of their iGen3, Chroma Graphics has had their specially designed building prewired for a second unit in the future. DOING MORE Duplo digital print finishers solve bindery bottleneck for leading Maryland commercial printer By Mari Ikeda Believing that their present bindery equipment for their offset presses could handle the digital workflow as well, the company soon encountered a bottleneck in their bindery process. Rusty Coolidge, President of Chroma Graphics states, “After setting up web-to-print services and national accounts requiring extremely quick turnaround times with jobs to be printed, finished, and mailed within the same day, we decided we needed to take a hard look at our direction and what we were doing.” After thorough research, they found the ideal digital print finishing solution in the Duplo SCC (Slitter/Cutter/Creaser) equipped near-line bookletmaking system and DC-645 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser. Output from their iGen3 could simply be taken and loaded into the Duplo equipment for effortless, automated finishing. Before purchasing the Duplo SCC bookletmaker, the operator would take pages printed from the iGen3 to the bindery, fold and saddle-stitch them on a large stitcher which handles their conventional printing. They found this very inefficient because digital work had to be scheduled along with their offset work in one bindery. Running on tight schedules, there was no room for error. For a conventional printer, digital printing at that time was typically dismissed as being of lesser quality, and the company didn’t feel quite ready. However, after spending countless hours researching and looking at Xerox, Kodak, and HP Indigo digital presses, as well as conducting their own tests comparing offset jobs to digitally printed work only to find that the digital pieces 42
