Innovate Magazine - Spring 2008 - (Page 43) Exploring all available digital finishing manufacturers’ offerings, only the Duplo system was able to trim three sides, score not only the covers but the inside pages as well. With their Duplo SCC-equipped near-line bookletmaker, they are now able to handle the same jobs using one operator who is able to efficiently run both the iGen3 and Duplo simultaneously. Before deciding on the Duplo system, Chroma Graphics looked at two of its competitors, but after their intensive research and seeing the big limitations in their models, the choice became very clear to go with Duplo. “With the Duplo system’s ability to score covers and inside pages as well as three-side trim, it was a clear fit for us, especially for our variable data work off the iGen3. Duplo could do what the competition couldn’t; that made the decision easy for us,” comments Coolidge. Deciding on a near-line system as opposed to an in-line system was also the right decision for Chroma Graphics. “Being that we prewired for another digital press in the future, we didn’t want to be handcuffed where an in-line finisher would only work with that printer, and if the printer were to go down all of a sudden, we’d be stuck. With a near-line system, we can be printing something while at the same time binding something else so it made a lot more sense to us,” Coolidge further states. Finishing of personalized postcards and greeting cards has also greatly improved since acquiring the DC-645 Slitter/ Cutter/Creaser. This unit produces professional quality, fullbleed applications by slitting, cutting, and creasing digitally printed documents in a single pass. It has the ability to read printed images and automatically adjust and compensate for the common problem of image shift. It slits, cuts, and creases documents in precisely the right place around the image every time, reducing waste and ensuring high quality and optimum productivity. For creasing, the DC-645 uses a channel creaser method versus a scoring method which uses a roller wheel. With a heavy duty cycle and the ability to manage heavier substrates (up to 350 gsm) and larger sheet sizes, the DC-645 has the first and only ultrasonic double detection sensor in the market, a reject tray, and is capable of cutting full-bleed, 30-up business cards on a 14-inch x 20-inch sheet size with an optional business card module. Automation is also a key criterion to Chroma Graphics because it allows them to do more with fewer operators, thus allowing for quicker turnaround times and increased profits. With Duplo equipment’s automated features, they are now able to handle more work efficiently and with superior results. “The same operator who runs the iGen3 also runs the SCC bookletmaker and DC-645 and does a great job at it. That isn’t something we could do a few years ago; it wasn’t possible, but it is now,” comments Coolidge. Ease-of-use and job setup were other important facts which were considered. “The scoring, three-side trimming, and automated computerized job setup were far superior to the competition. We find it very easy to use the Duplo because we can tell it to run a 12-page job with cover, take three sheets off the top end, one sheet off the bottom, score and marry them up—the accuracy is unbelievable, and we guarantee that the job will be right when it leaves our building,” says Coolidge. “With the Duplo system’s ability to score covers and inside pages as well as three-side trim, it was a clear fit for us, especially for our variable data work off the iGen3.” — Rusty Coolidge, President, Chroma Graphics The company is even taking jobs from their conventional printers, which need to be scored and folded to be finished on the Duplo equipment. Having to previously outsource scoring jobs daily, they are now able to keep most of the work in-house since purchasing their Duplo machines, and the cost savings and quality have proven tremendous. The printing industry has experienced huge changes in the past several years, but Chroma Graphics views these changes in a positive light. “If you constantly look to make changes to stay on top of technology and keep your mind open to new things and ideas, changes are good,” says Coolidge. Their steady growth in a tough market, continuous investment in the newest, technologically advanced equipment, as well as a state-of-the art facility employing a full-time crew of 60 of the best trained staff in town is proof of Chroma Graphics’ success in staying ahead of the game. They are always listening, researching, and looking for the next great thing to push them to an even higher level, and “doing more with less” via automation is a philosophy they stand true to.
