Mailing Systems Technology - February 2008 - (Page 27) PRODUCT APPLICATION FORMSCAN MagVision—An Intelligent Scanning Solution Formscan’s MagVision is an intelligent scanning solution that delivers the technology that provides the first true zero risk read and print solution by allowing variable data codes to be “read” through opaque material, such as closed face business security envelopes. Delivered as a standalone unit, MagVision can be easily integrated into any customer environment or application. And because the barcodes to be utilized can be prepared on a standard laser printer, no special inks, fonts or papers are required. Yet, all of the proven reliability of barcode technology is retained. MagVision is ideally suited for read and print mailings, quality addressing applications and other secure personalized communications. MagVision gives 100% confidence that there can be no mismatch between the personalized contents and the address printed on the envelope. In a quality addressing application, MagVision will sit downstream of an inserter, but in front of the inkjet printer. Sealed closed face envelops will pass across the MagVision read head. MagVision will read the unique customer information stored within the barcode printed on the enclosed document. Data is decoded and transferred to the inkjet printer software, triggering the correct characters for printing. MagVision can be used on its own as illustrated, or it can be part of a larger solution working in tandem with Formscan’s DocuCheck verification system and/or Formscan’s Sentinel automated document factory solutions. DocuCheck utilizes a CCD camera to OCR the printed address on the envelope and match the results with what is expected from the MagVision system. Sentinel provides scalable vendor independent real-time monitoring of devices to deliver database-driven piece level tracking and automatic reprint file generation for damaged documents. Additional benefits of the MagVision system include mail sort discounts and lesser environmental impacts. By using non-windowed envelopes, you reduce the risk of key data failing to appear within a window, while also reducing the potential for inserter wrecks. And by not using windowed envelopes made of glassine, you reduce your recycling costs and enhance your environmental image. A major Security Printer was looking to enclose their sensitive, personalized documents into closed faced envelopes, but required a matching address and other personalized information to be printed onto the exterior. The solution they were looking for needed to guarantee 100% integrity, be robust and reliable enough to operate within a high-volume mailing environment and be scale-able across a variety of jobs. MagVision was delivered as part of a secure read and print solution, which was comprised of MagVision, Transport, InkJet System and Controller. The solution was positioned at the output of a mail inserter, so that as sealed, filled envelopes exited the inserter, they were fed directly onto the transport. As each envelope passed across the MagVision read head, the barcode printed on the uppermost prime document was read. The unique customer information stored within this barcode was then decoded and transferred to the inkjet printer software. The appropriate personalization (address and personal message) was then imaged onto the envelope. As a result of the MagVision solution, they were able to increase their mail security as required. Standardization and reduction of envelope stock was also achieved, which resulted in better buying power and reduced stock holding and waste.
