These charts show an industry in flux, reacting to the economy and a culture change, as more and more of your customers desire more sophisticated communications — whether electronic or hardcopy. The most notable change is the decreasing average salaries of managers and supervisors. The reasons for the decrease: a continuing trend of small print companies beginning to provide mailing services and less tenure for mail managers (average years in industry is now 12, compared to 13 last year). On the flip side, managers in certain industries fared well with average salaries increasing by 5%. New managers coming into the industry are also benefiting with higher pay. Managers of one to two years average $43,200, compared to $42,700 for managers of three to five years. A national trend in all industries is fewer women in the workplace. That holds true for female mail center staff whose numbers have declined this year. Like their counterparts in other industries, women make less than men, and in this economy, pay does not always cover the expenses of working. The entry level pay for women averages $10.67, while men earn $11.06. If a woman can “stick it out,” longevity helps. The pay differential is only 2 cents less for women at the high end of the pay scale. 16 SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2008 | WWW.MAILINGSYSTEMSTECHNOLOGY.COM http://www.MailingSystemsTechnology.com
