industry news from mark taylor This is a conversation conducted in a mood of speculation. It is a conversation of discovery and exploration. These conversations take time and need to be done in a mood of peace. Tell the other person initially that you would like to explore the possibilities of using their service to solve a particular problem and ask them for a time that you could talk for about a half an hour. In this way, you can create the best context for this type of conversation. It is safe to entertain different ideas or to propose what may seem like impractical options. Expand your horizon of possibilities, and generate new ideas. You don’t want to rush to conclusions. It is like a brainstorming session, and to be effective, you don’t want to be critical because you might spoil the mood of openness and sharing. You should explore the reasons why the other person has a particular opinion but in a mood of curiosity. You want to suspend your judgments and bias and maintain openness without trying to control the outcome. Listen for ideas that may change the way you are looking at the situation. Listen for possible actions that you can take. The best metaphor I can think of is a “ﬁrst date.” You want to see if you feel a sense of connection, but you don’t want to move too fast into a commitment or come across as desperate. Following these ideas can open greater possibilities and produce greater results in your operation.
