Parcel - July 2008 - (Page 6) editor’s note Dan O’Rourke | Editor Comings and Goings A year ago in this, the July issue of PARCEL, I commented on “a changing landscape.” The column focused on the new postal law and what it might mean to the USPS and on the DHL struggle to fix its problems and become a competitive force in the US parcel market. Well, things have certainly progressed; some for the better. The USPS seems to be adapting well to the new postal law. It has introduced several new products and is in the process of vigorously competing for parcel contracts. It has a ways to go and the process is slow, but things seem to be headed in the right direction. We’ll see. Not so with DHL. Huge losses in the US market, accelerated by the slow US economy, has caused parent company Deutsche Post to make some pretty drastic changes to the DHL Americas operating model. (Please refer to the Special Edition of the PARCEL e-newsletter you received on June 3 for details from DHL, UPS, USPS and industry experts.) To be sure, DHL is still a factor in the US market, but not the major price controlling competitor that many of us had hoped for. And with no relief in sight for high fuel prices, the prospects for lower parcel carrier rates looks grim — it looks like another high delivery cost year ahead. This is our annual issue of “Who’s Who in the Parcel Industry.” Starting on page 24, we dedicate the issue to profiling companies and executives in our industry who are making a difference. If you are looking for a handy shortcut to parcel industry resources, this Who’s Who is the resource tool for you. Check it out. Also, we are proud to have on our cover the WILDS (Women in Logistics & Delivery Services) Board of Directors Anita Pursley, Kate Muth, Shoshana Grove, Michelle Yorgey, Nancy Sparks, Kathy Siviter, Teresa Anderson, Ruth Goldway, Joy Leong and Kathryn Kobe. This organization dedicates itself to promoting women’s leadership in our industry. It provides networking, mentoring and training opportunities to address issues that women in our industry regularly face. WILDS just held its largest event in Anaheim, California at the National Postal Forum. And we are proud to announce that their next major networking event will be at our PARCEL Forum, October 6, in Chicago. Endicia is generously hosting the event. And speaking of our PARCEL Forum, we have our full lineup of sessions now posted at www.PARCELforum. com. Don’t forget to check out our all-new, full-day tutorials. If your company is looking for “green” solutions, if you are expanding in the international marketplace, if you are concerned about the legal issues of transportation or if you need to cut costs without hampering efficiency, we have a tutorial for you. We’re looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the PARCEL Forum, October 6-8 in Chicago. Visit www.parcelforum.com And, as always, thanks for reading PARCEL. 6 July 2008 www.PARCELindustry.com http://www.PARCELforum.com http://www.PARCELforum.com http://www.parcelforum.com http://www.PARCELindustry.com
