People will take more accountability if you allow them accountability; if you dictate it, they will walk away from the exercise and not know what to do. They learn from me what behavior will help them get to where they want to go. OD UC 34 MAY2008 · WWW.FIT-PRO.COM OM S.C ON TI TRISH AND HER CLIENTS I like working with clients that are ready for change and are motivated because I know there’s likely to be internal motivation there that will drive them to succeed, and they will be more likely to be compliant and adhere to a lifestyle of physical activity. I tell my clients: Do what you need to do that’s best for you, both here and down the road. Make an educated decision about your health, fitness and wellness, about how you select who’s going to be part of your health care team, what food you’re going to eat today and tomorrow and what kind of lifestyle you want. A LEARNING EXPERIENCE At a certain point in my career, I had been training for five years, and a client had been diagnosed with breast cancer. With the doctor’s help, she made a conscious decision to keep working out. From the first step, she felt the empowerment of movement, so she kept working out. Because of a bad bicycle accident, she was afraid to get on the stationary bike. She’s not afraid of it anymore. She took up tennis, running and spinning at 50. There’s no stopping her! I learned from her what it is to have a self-fulfilling prophecy, how to turn it around and how to not focus on “How am I going to do this?” and to just shut up and get to work. THOUGHTS AND GOALS FROM THE “MUSE” OF FITNESS In the next five years, I would like to be the face of fitness for the general consumer. There’s so much information out there, and I feel that people are always overwhelmed. You know how people thought of Walter Cronkite as the trusty person they can get their news from? I want people to think of Trish Muse as who they can get their trusty fitness information from. I want the general consumer to think of me as their “Muse” of fitness. Ultimately, my desire is to have my heart lead me to do no harm. If you’re led at first to do no harm, that’s often something that helps people think twice about their training. I’ve had so many patients harmed by trainers and instructors, and it’s hard to get them “back on the cow.” http://www.bodyproductions.com http://WWW.FIT-PRO.COM
