Personal Fitness Professional - June 2008 - (Page 34) [ EXERCISE SPOTLIGHT ] FUNCTIONAL TRAINING BOARD SQUAT START: Carefully step onto the Functional Training Board, feet hip-distance apart and abdominals engaged. ACTION: Keeping the abdominals engaged and the chest lifted, slowly bend the knees and lower the body until the glutes are near but not below the knees. Do not let the knees protrude past the toes. Return to the start. For added difficulty, do one squat and use the core to twist the Functional Training Board 90° before the next squat is performed. LUNGE START: Stand with one foot on the narrow end of the Functional Training Board and the other foot back in a lunge position; feet should be hip-distance apart, and the length of the stride should be the appropriate length to do a lunge with 90° angles on both knees at the finish. ACTION: Keeping the abdominals engaged, maintain balance while lowering into a lunge. Do not go lower than 90° on the knees. Try to keep the board lowered about halfway. ABDOMINAL CRUNCHES START: Lie on the board with the glutes on the board so that the back is fairly straight. Support the head/neck by placing the fingertips on the back of the head, elbows wide. To increase intensity, press down with the hips so that the board is at a decline. Use the engaged abdominals to hold the board in this position and keep it from moving back up. ACTION: Keeping the board stable, slowly curl up with the upper body, chin lifted off of the chest and the elbows wide. Stop when the shoulder blades have lifted off of the board, and return to the start; repeat. 34 Exercises designed by Power Systems Education Department JUNE-JULY2008 · WWW.FIT-PRO.COM http://WWW.FIT-PRO.COM
