Personal Fitness Professional - June 2008 - (Page 36) [ PRODUCT PROFILE ] THE NEW EXO CHAIR FROM BALANCED BODY FULL-BODY WORKOUT, SMALL FOOTPRINT BY KEN ENDELMAN The only Pilates chair with attachments for resistance bands, Balanced Body’s new EXO Chair allows your clients to do many of the Pilates exercises that could previously be done only on a Reformer — now within a fraction of the space. The EXO Chair improves strength, balance, flexibility and agility while providing a unique Pilates-based functional training workout. BODY COPY The EXO Chair is one of the most challenging pieces of Pilates equipment for building strength in the legs and shoulders while still working to improve core stability. To use it, your clients sit, lie or stand on the chair or the floor and push the pedal with their hands or feet. Springs attach the pedal to the chair, providing variable degrees of resistance. Exercises can focus on core strength, leg strength, shoulder girdle stability, mobility and strength and functional movements, such as standing, climbing, pushing and lifting. The EXO Chair’s optional Functional Resistance Kit allows a full-body functional training workout that touches every muscle group from every angle. Clients can now do many of the exercises traditionally found on much larger pieces of Pilates equipment like the Reformer and Cadillac (Trapeze Table). These include exercises like roll downs, feet in straps, short box abdominals and rowing, allowing you to create a workout that can focus on strength, flexibility and core stability at the same time. As an example, you can start a client with a traditional exercise like double leg pumps and then add biceps curls with the bands for a much more challenging workout. This flexibility also gives you the ability to create specific sport-related programs for the athletes at your facility — golfers, runners or skiers, for example — for even more programming options. The EXO Chair has eight different resistance settings and comes with a padded, non-slip pedal and a wide sitting area. It arrives fully assembled, and no hardware requires loosening or tightening. Very lightweight (36 pounds), the EXO is easily portable and stackable. Made of durable premium stratified maple, you have a choice of over 88 upholstery colors. A 20x20 room accommodates eight to 10 chairs, with room to spare. For storage, you’ll need a 40% smaller footprint than competitive products require (based on storing six chairs). EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING PACKAGES Balanced Body offers combined equipment and training packages to help you get an EXO Chair program off the ground quickly. Training can be done at your location, and previous Pilates experience is not required. Pilates continues to grow exponentially as a form of exercise and personal training. The latest Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) figures show that the number of North Americans participating in Pilates has grown from 1.5 million in 2000 to 10.7 million people in 2006 — a tremendous increase of over 600%! For personal trainers considering an economical, apparatus-based Pilates training program, the EXO Chair is the ideal piece of equipment — especially if space is limited. Extremely versatile and durable, the EXO offers a variety of workout and programming options to keep your existing clients coming back as well as attract new ones. Ken Endelman is the Founder and CEO of Balanced Body, the world’s largest provider of Pilates equipment, information and education.
