Personal Fitness Professional - August 2008 - (Page 31) [SPONSORED BY] SUPINE HIP EXTENSION WITH KNEE FLEXION START: Lie on the floor, calves on the ball, arms out to the sides and palms face-up. ACTION: Extend up from the hips until you reach a straight line, feet-hips-shoulders. Keeping the hips lifted, draw the ball in by bending your knees. The hips should remain in line with the shoulders and knees. Slowly straighten the legs, then lower the hips to the starting position. PUSH-JACK START: Lie face-down with your hips supported by the ball and walk forward on your hands letting the ball roll towards your shins and feet. ACTION: Perform a push-up by lowering your upper body towards the floor. As you push back to the start position, bend the knees, bringing the legs underneath. Keep the spine in neutral. As you lower again, straighten the legs behind you. The head should be in line with the rest of the spine, and the thoracic and lumber spine should stay in neutral. Keep the umbilicus drawn lightly inward to activate the inner unit. ALTERNATING SUPERMAN START: Lie face-down over a Swiss ball, balancing on toes and fingertips. ACTION: Pick up one leg and the opposite arm until they are parallel to the ground. The arm should be positioned at a 45º angle from the head, and the thumb should be pointing upward. The butt muscle should also be activated. Hold this position for up to 10 seconds. Lower the arm and leg at the same time while lifting the opposite arm and leg into the same position. Do not let the back hyperextend nor the head lose its axial alignment with the spine.
