Personal Fitness Professional - August 2008 - (Page 7) [ LETTER K E L LI FROM THE EDITOR] CA L A B RE SE [ED IT AT THE AGE OF THIRTEEN, I participated in my first “aerobics” class, and I became a certified group fitness O instructor at 17. I didn’t plan on being a partner in one of the best fitness chains in New Jersey or having corporate fitness clients such as Calvin Klein Cosmetics and Nabisco. Nor did I plan to open a school, become the lead fitness expert for eDiets, be interviewed for hundreds of radio shows, be an invited guest on TV, write books, be a spokesperson and travel internationally. I write this not to brag but to show you what’s possible. At the age of 13, I didn’t fully realize the far-reaching impact being physically fit could have on every aspect of someone’s life — including my own. I didn’t know it was possible to help someone lose 100 pounds and make their diabetes go away or gain the confidence to leave a bad relationship. I also never set out to become the editor of PFP, but every experience that has found me has been an amazing learning experience. There have been lots of beginnings and endings in my career thus far as I further realize what’s possible as a fitness professional. It is with both sadness and excitement that I am announcing I will be stepping out of my role as editor and stepping up to Advisor for PFP+. You can find out all of the exciting information about PFP+ and some of my other upcoming projects, such as the Benevolent Uprising Tour with Phil Kaplan, online and in upcoming issues. I am honored to have worked with the astounding team at PFP. I have learned volumes about publishing and multimedia, connected with many of our subscribers and vendors and enjoyed coordinating the articles with our authors who write out of a true labor of love. I would not consider leaving the loyal and valued PFP subscribers in anything other than the very competent hands of someone who could do an even better job than I in taking PFP to the next level. That person is Shelby Murphy — an expert, a journalist, a fitness professional, a studio owner, a mom, a basketball coach, an Adventure Boot Camp Instructor and a phenomenal person who has her nimble fingers on the pulse of what our subscribers want to see and hear. Your friend in fitness, HELLO! I AM HONORED AND OVERJOYED to be your new editor of PFP. Yes, your editor. PFP has always been the one fitness industry magazine crafted by and written for you, the trainer, so it only makes sense that someone like you sits in the driver’s seat and steers this informative, multimedia machine through our fast-changing industry. As an owner of a thriving personal training studio and women’s boot camp, I too have lived the three facets of PFP articles and a trainer’s career. I started as a new trainer in a personal training studio, moved into a fitness center, where I trained clients and took on the additional role as marketing director, and eventually set my entrepreneurial spirit free by opening my own studio. Along the way, I’ve used my journalism background to write countless health, fitness and small business articles for regional and national publications. I will build on the visionary progress made by Kelli Calabrese and the staff of PFP while always being the reader’s strongest advocate. My promise to you is that every article will not only be engaging and fun to read but will also help you become a better trainer, a more crucial staff member, a more knowledgeable health coach, a more profitable business owner and a more balanced human being. Those are the type of articles that have helped me build a kick-butt training career, and they are the nuggets I still seek out to cash in on even more success. But I also want to know what you’re yearning to read and what will make the difference in your career. Please email me with your ideas at shelby.m@rbpub.com. Together we’ll create new opportunities and seek higher professional peaks — one word at a time. Onward and upward, R] KEL L I@ RBP U B .
