Personal Fitness Professional - September 2008 - (Page 30) [ EXERCISE SPOTLIGHT ] ESSENTIAL PILATES EXERCISES USING THE OPTP PRO-ROLLER Pilates has been called the ultimate mind/body exercise, a whole approach to movement based on the work of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). Incorporating the Pro-Roller with Pilates exercise creates additional awareness of how your body feels and moves, helping develop better posture and body symmetry while challenging core strength and balance. The Pro-Roller is an excellent teaching tool, providing opportunities to playfully experience movement that targets strength and flexibility and decreases muscle stress and tension. For optimal benefit, Pro-Roller Pilates exercises are performed slowly and with conscious control, focusing on deep breathing and quality, precise movements. DYING BUG START: Lie on roller, neutral spine, knees bent, feet hip-width apart, abdominals engaged. ACTION: Inhale — Lift one arm and opposite knee to ceiling. ûExhale — Contract abdominals, reach arm overhead while lengthening leg parallel to the floor. TIPS: ûMaintain abdominal connection, up and in, throughout movement. ûKeep shoulder blades sliding back and down, neck relaxed. ûGently press the big toe and second toe into the floor, assisting stability. LEG EXTENSION START: Get on the hands and knees, roller placed just below the kneecaps, arms under shoulders, knees under hips, pelvis and spine neutral. ACTION: Inhale — Prepare for movement. ûExhale — Engage abdominals, keeping torso stable, and slowly reach one leg behind. ûInhale — Return leg to roller. ûExhale — Keep torso stable, and slowly extend other leg.
