Personal Fitness Professional - January/February 2009 - (Page 32) Influence EXERCISING YOUR How to become a community fitness leader By Michael Y. Seril As a fitness professional, you have an enormous amount of influence in the gym. Your clients hold what you say in high regard, and chances are they work hard outside of the gym so that you aren’t disappointed in them. Imagine if you could extend that influence beyond the walls of a studio or fitness facility and impact the lives of a whole community. If we truly care for the health and well-being of our fellow citizens, one could argue that we should never settle for being anything less than a community fitness leader. More than Just Good Will Becoming a community fitness leader will improve your personal training business in a variety of ways. First, it will enhance your credibility with other health and medical professionals. You will gather respect from those who are already trusted by the public, and the public will trust you, too. Testimonials from these influential individuals can propel your celebrity. Furthermore, if the doctors see that you are a knowledgeable fitness professional concerned about the well-being of the community, your medical referrals will increase. By increasing your profile as a community fitness leader, you also increase your credibility with potential clients. Suddenly, you create a potential market as large as an entire community. Not only will your business gain publicity as a community health provider, but it will also become a community hub for any questions, concerns and interests regarding fitness. An increase in publicity and credibility is likely to increase the amount of clientele coming in for services. Increased profits is always a good thing, but also keep in mind that with more funds, you have the potential to create even more programs and implement them over your increasing sphere of influence. You will also generate lecture and writing opportunities locally and beyond. Gaining publicity in your local area as an expert can translate into a platform to reach larger communities and perhaps entire cities. Enthusiasm for your local community can go a long way in giving you credibility to have an influence on a grander scale. Expert knowledge is coveted by the media at all levels.
