The system is said to allow for less than 2 mm of movement by the patient. Orfit is also offering a handson demonstration of the system for the duration of the show. Orfit Industries America | www.orfit.com Elekta Debuts Solution to Extend Gamma Knife Utilization Elekta will debut its eXtend program, a complete system for extending the utilization of Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion, at ASTRO 2008. Providing cross-functional advantages in both stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiation therapy, the rigid carbon-fiber construction of the extend frame provides maximum stability, reportedly enabling the most accurate, noninvasive localization available. Physicians can choose a noninvasive fixation method for targets where treatment accuracy is still crucial, but not paramount. The eXtend is pending FDA 510(k) clearance and is not yet available for commercial sale in the U.S. Elekta | www.elekta.com FDA Clears BrainLAB’s Monte Carlo Dose Engine BrainLAB said it received 510(k) clearance for its Monte Carlo Dose Calculation Algorithm, which is already being used at several clinical cooperation sites worldwide. The BrainLAB Monte Carlo Dose Calculation software is a high-performance Monte Carlo algorithm for therapeutic photon beams supporting nearly all linear accelerator and multileaf collimator (MLC) types. Monte Carlo is now available as an option on the iPlan RT Dose treatment planning software. Dose calculations can be completed within seconds for conformal beam and dynamic arc treatments and within a few minutes for complex IMRT cases.
