Up Time Magazine- February/March 2008 - (Page 17) Transforming the Way the Army Takes Care of it’s Warriors The consequences of the national spotlight being pointed at Building 18 of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center go far beyond maintenance. The Army has transformed the way it provides medical treatment to all of their Soldiers including service members on active duty and in the Reserve and National Guard. The focus is on helping ill, injured and wounded Soldiers who will take six months or longer to heal. Throughout the entire process, the Army Family Covenant provides a holistic means of assistance for families and loved ones in education, employment, housing, recreation, fitness and other Army’s Well Being programs. administrative and family support services including help with pay issues, housing, special benefits, transportation, vocational training and education opportunities, recreation and fitness as well as life skills coaching. What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future? The Army will continue to improve the health care delivery system for its ill, injured and wounded Warriors and tailor it to meet the needs of Warriors in Transition. THe Army will continue to: • Increase the quality of the health care services by recruiting topnotch health care professionals. • Improve the quality of housing facilities for Warriors in Transition. • Increase opportunities for educational and vocational development of its Warriors in Transition. • Promote feedback and input from Warriors in Transition and their families to ensure the system best meets their needs. What Has The Army Done? In less than a year, the Army has activated Warrior Transition Units and Community Based Health Organizations specially designed to provide a holistic delivery of care to ill, injured and wounded Soldiers and their Families: • Thirty-five Warrior Transition Units were activated to support ill, injured and wounded Soldiers and their families. • Warriors are asked to focus on healing and are encouraged to provide feedback on care and service delivery. • The Army has changed the way it provides care to its ill, injured and wounded Soldiers forever and for the better. • The transformation of warrior care is only the beginning of health care delivery improvements planned. Why is This Important to the Army? More than 80 percent of Soldiers who are ill, injured and wounded as a result of the persistent conflict return to military duty. The Army has made a commitment to serve each of these Soldiers and their Families for life and vows never to violate the Army Ethos of never leaving a fallen comrade. What Is It? Warriors in Transition receive treatment through synchronized clinical care, benefits processing assistance and life skills development to ensure a successful transition back to duty or into the Department of Veterans Affairs heath and benefits systems. Warriors in Transition receive medical care, personnel, pay and leadership support from a team known as a Triad of Care, which consists of a physician, nurse case manager, and military squad leader personally assigned to each Soldier.
