glasses. That switch increased glove and glasses use, and virtually eliminated hand and eye injuries in the workplace. Mr. Sites and Mr. King stressed that while concepts like Zero Tolerance and Zero Incidents and Zero Failures may seem out of reach for many, if you can create management support, a passion for excellence and a motivated team, these goals can be realized by every organization. Once the maintenance and reliability program review sessions were completed, the group was treated to an extraordinary tour of the Kennedy Space Center in the context of a “Launch Ready” facility. STS-122 Shuttle Atlantis was scheduled for a mission just two days after our tour. Although the scheduled launch was eventually scrubbed due to faulty fuel tank sensors (darned reliability issues) the facility was “all systems go” during the tour. This fuel sensor failure had no Tour Bus in front of the Shuttle Cargo relation to the facility Handling Building (photo by Gregory Hier) maintenance responsibilities and Mr. King reported that the facility maintenance group has never experienced a failure that interfered with a launch. Highlights of the tour included a visit to the RCM/Predictive Technologies and Instruments Lab and the O&M Shop to view how critical equipment is monitored with the Andover System. This was followed by a drive straight up to the launch pad with the Shuttle Atlantis 100% staged and ready to go. The group moved on to the International Space Station Processing station, the high bay space vehicle building and the Saturn V facility. We spotted dozens of large Florida alligators sunning themselves in the waterways throughout the facility.
