I know that there are a lot of fantastic maintenance efforts taking place around the world, and we want to hear about all of them. It is open season for entries into the 2008 edition of the Uptime magazine PdM Program of the Year Awards. This is our 3rd year, and we are gearing up for this to be the best year yet. There is no fee to enter, as we do this strictly to spread the word far and wide that maintenance and reliability programs are incredibly valuable to the organizations they support. Get the recognition you truly deserve by entering our awards, and see how your program stacks up. I also want to mention the Reliability Centered Maintenance Managers’ Forum (RCM-2008) and the Enterprise Asset Management Summit (EAM-2008), which are coming in March to Las Vegas. New this year at the event is MTrain-2008, the Maintenance Training Conference, which focuses on advanced strategies to keep you and your workforce functioning at the highest level possible. You can find more information about these learning events on page 41. In the feature story, you will read about a serious breakdown in a maintenance program. There were lapses at many levels, including budgeting, planning, scheduling, communication and oversight. It is a cautionary tale because, although this incident happened at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, it just as easily could happen at any facility anywhere in the world. Of course, every setback presents an opportunity for a comeback. The Army wasted little time in moving forward in creating an improvement plan. As the national spotlight was casting them in a bad light, they were busy taking the steps necessary to ensure that the problems would be corrected permanently. It is an interesting look at a failure and the consequent rebuilding to raise the maintenance program to a higher level. I hope you enjoy this issue. As always, thank you for reading.
