the acceptance criteria for each step. It is not sufficient to say that you want a quality job. You have to say what a quality job looks like. Each check step in the job then requires sign off before the task can continue. A simple illustration in using an ITP is the replacement of an electric motor. You may want to check the alignment results before guards are installed and the labor leaves the job. You might also want to check that the motor terminal connections have been assembled correctly before the terminal box cover is replaced. While ITP’s will not prevent all failures, they will at least give you some confidence that you will not get failures from the issues that have been addressed in the ITP. You will notice that none of this stuff is rocket science. It is very basic stuff - the nuts and bolts of maintenance in fact. We all like to play with the highly technical and interesting things, but we must pay attention to the basics first. If we don’t deal with these BASIC issues, then we are destined to continue our mediocre maintenance performance. Remember – All the maintenance philosophy in the world will not help you if you can’t put your machines together properly in the first place!
