Up Time Magazine- June/July 2008 - (Page 20) ELECTRONIC/PAPERLESS Increasing Efficiency LOW COST HIGH USE – Eliminates data entry and paperwork, freeing resources (Reduces system TCO) – Improves productivity at the point of performance by putting the full resources of the EAM/CMMS system at the technicians’ fingertips (Knowledge worker support) – Increases the quantity, quality, and timeliness of information in the EAM/ CMMS system (Increase system utilization) moving to a predictive maintenance model, but few have invested the necessary time, energy and money in order to get to that point. In order for true CBM or RCM initiatives to be successful, the plant floor needs to connect with the back office. Technology today offers the opportunity to directly link the asset information with the back office and operational systems. With these advances in technology beginning to take hold in the maintenance arena, wireless and Internet devices allow equipment to signal to maintenance that something is amiss. Operating machinery can be connected directly to the EAM system via the Internet to track hundreds of operating data points via sensors. The end effect is that the integration allows the asset to drive the demands of the maintenance department with on-line, accurate information. With intelligent devices integrated with the EAM system and the EAM system directly tied to the manufacturing system, preventive and predictive maintenance will be standardized with service windows conveniently scheduled so as to not impact end-unit production. The result is a true collaboration between manufacturing and maintenance. Thus far we have discussed the significant advantages of an integrated suite of back office application, mobile technology and embedded sensors with smart devices…the next evolution is to freely expose this information in a format that allows management and executives to make decisions based on accurate global information. Most asset intensive organizations today have embraced one or several of the maintenance and/or operational theories considered to be “Best Practice” when it comes to effectively managing and maintaining their plant and equipment. Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Six Sigma Continuous Improvement and Lean Maintenance all share common goals – increasing asset uptime and utilization. What better way to accomplish this than by allowing the asset to drive the demands of your organization? Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are building smart devices and embedding sensors in their equipment and embedding automation to continuously monitor asset health. With the cost of wireless and sensor chips and communications declining so rapidly, intelligence will ultimately be embedded in all operating consoles. The challenge comes with the way in which the data is collected and transmitted to the maintenance technicians through their EAM system. Typically, the decision makers are evaluating manually collected data that is often a day late, and, at worst, erroneous. Many companies have realized that the long-term maintenance costs associated with predictive maintenance are far less than traditional run-to-failure and preventive practices. Analytics, business intelligence, and “Executive Dashboards” are not new concepts, but they have not necessarily been embraced as fervently as they should be when it comes to asset management. Perhaps it is because many organizations still have disparate islands of data, perhaps the data is incomplete, or perhaps the data is old and not based on online information. Leveraging a fully integrated suite of back office applications on a single technology stack, coupled with technologies such as mobile and embedded sensory information, can eliminate these issues and offer an opportunity to start making decisions that truly impact the bottom line.
