Up Time Magazine- June/July 2008 - (Page 23) empowers users at all levels, from the shop floor to the boardroom - to drive intelligent decisions with actionable information. Through role-based interactive dashboards, proactive alert notifications, on-line predictive analytics, and rules-based workflow procedures, information is presented pro-actively for effective decision-making. Executives are able to better align their corporate strategies and tactics such as growth, profitability, and yield with their individual business functions, and they are able to communicate these business objectives across their enterprise. Business functions can view the operational demands of their assets and collaborate to reduce the negative impact their actions may have on individual departments. For example, manufacturing can communicate customer demand schedules, yet be able to readily determine if a poor performing asset could have an impact on quality and yield. Maintenance users can monitor the health of their operations and drill into the transactional database (their work management module) allowing them to quickly identify and evaluate issues and the potential causes, and move to isolate these problems with informative actions. These actions may include redefining PM schedules for certain assets, deciding to replace versus rebuild an asset, re-negotiating contracts with suppliers where material costs are beyond a specified threshold, or implementing training events where certain tasks seem to take longer by some compared to others. Such decisions can have both short-term benefits as well as long-term monetary gain for the organization. Whatever the metric, whatever the objective, evaluating accurate, complete and on-line information will yield better decisions. Simplifying the way in which data is captured will substantially improve the quality of the information from which those decisions are formulated. The end result is a consistent and exact message being communicated across your enterprise. nology and philosophy traditionally comes from two sources: need and vision. This change can be embraced gradually or with surprising fervor. Changes in technological tools and processes for maintenance and operations are continually moving us one step closer to Future Perfect. Embracing these changes allows for collaboration between all departments and systems. In the end, firms need a unified organization in which all departments are aligned with the strategic corporate direction, and key decisions are being made from timely and accurate information. Summary If organizations expect to maintain their competitive edge, it is strategically imperative that new technologies are embraced and industry trends are adopted. Changing workforces, global competition and corporate governance initiatives are putting ever-increasing pressure on maintenance and operations to automate and reduce the complexity of data capture.
