Airborne ultrasound has proven over and over again to be a preferred method for technicians to quickly scan and locate leaks (in-leakage) around flanges, bolts and access plates. Then, using sealing tape and high temp RTV sealants, leaks are eventually sealed. In this particular case with the pulverized coal ducts, not only was the oxygen level maintained at a low-level, but sealing the leaks also decreased the overall amount of nitrogen being used, which generated a cost saving advantage as well. In the past, I have had similar experiences locating leaks on boiler hot air ducts. I have actually seen technicians, on cold winter days in Georgia, literally take the gloves off their hands, cut the cloth fingers off of them, coat them with high temp RTV and shove the gloves into holes along the expansion joints as well as around access plates and welds that were leaking.
