Multiple leaks found around expansion joint. Again, with the amount of speed at which the air is being moved through the ducting, air in-leakage would draw cold air into the duct. This lowers the temperature of the heated air, which completely defeats the purpose for which the heated air is being transported. I observed another similar application in a textile plant recently while doing an on-site ultrasound workshop. In this facility, a fabric collector system pulls loose frays and other particles from the weaving machines out of the surrounding air, sending the debris collected to a machine that collects the fibers. These fibers can then be used for other projects. Here again, these fabric collectors need routine maintenance performed. I noticed several places where the fabric was actually protruding from the ducting, creating a possible work hazard. In this particular plant, 480-volt electrical switchgear was nearby. If the fabric gets inside the electrical cabinets it could cause an electrical fire. Luckily, the technician involved in the training could easily hear the leaks around the ducting, so he will be much more aware of the problem in the future. Baghouses, dust collectors and fabric collectors are filtration units that have to be maintained for optimum performance. Even though they can take up a large amount of space in or outside of a plant, these units often go unattended by maintenance personnel. If you don’t have a vacuum leak program, start one. You may be surprised at just how many leaks you find.
