(CTC) develops improvements in cables and connectors for vibration analysis applications. Undertaking an analysis of materials compatible with caustic soda has identified that Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) or Ryton® (manufactured by Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC) has excellent chemical resistance to caustic soda. It is advertised as the world’s premier product for demanding plastic components in automotive, electrical, appliance, and industrial applications. This polyphenylene sulfide based compound is a semi-crystalline polymer that can be molded or machined, has a melting point of 285°C, and will not dissolve in any solvent below 200°C. PPS is also a dielectric material and has stable insulating properties over a wide range of conditions. Since PPS has such an outstanding resistance to a wide variety of aggressive chemical environments, it makes an excellent low cost solution for our troublesome industrial vibration applications. In fact, the wet end of a paper machine with caustic soda solutions is a perfect application for PPS, but it is well suited for many other applications as well. purposes. Figure 7 shows a product currently available with this configuration. As shown in Figure 6, the B2R insert and back shell would be made from PPS. The seal tight boot would be made from silicone. And again, once the Teflon® cable has been attached to the connector, the back shell can be filled with a chemical resistant epoxy for mechanical stability and sealing purposes before the boot is pulled down over the top of it for added protection. This product is shown in Figure 8. Successful Connectors However, ther are solutions available that allow you to have a chemically compatible connector for the wet end of a paper mill, and one that will withstand the caustic soda environment. For example, in Figure 5, the A2R insert and back shell would be made from PPS. The locking ring would be 316 stainless steel, and the gasket would be silicone. Once the Teflon® cable has been attached to the connector, the back shell can be filled with a chemical resistant epoxy for mechanical stability and sealing Figure 8 – B2R Connector and Yellow Teflon® Cable. Figure 7 – A2R Connector and Yellow Teflon® Cable. The PPS, 316 Stainless Steel, Silicone, and Epoxy filler, used in Figures 7 and 8 are all chemically compatible with caustic soda and should provide a long life for both of these chemically compatible connectors from CTC. 64 june/july 2008 http://www.mobiusinstitute.com http://www.mobiusinstitute.com/simulators.html http://www.mobiusinstitute.com
