Up Time Magazine- August/September 2008 - (Page 6) upfront Good Stuff We are on the verge of announcing the 2008 winners of the Uptime Magazine PdM Program of the Year Awards. Although we are not quite able to do it as of press time, I will say that this year’s group of entries is simply fantastic. We appreciate everyone who took the time to fill out the entries and supply us with any additional information we requested in order for a chance to win and to see how their program stacks up. We will be formally announcing the winners at the Predictive Maintenance Conference, PdM-2008, in Omaha, NE, which is taking place September 15th18th. This conference is a high quality learning experience for those involved, or planning to become involved, in predictive maintenance and condition monitoring. The slate of workshops and learning sessions will bring a staggering amount of real-world knowledge to those who attend. The lineup of presenters is a nice mix of acknowledged industry experts, very knowledgeable end-users and several of last year’s PdM Program of the Year winners. It should be an outstanding event, so if you haven’t seen any of the specifics on the conference yet, go to www.maintenanceconference.com. In this issue, we are honored to have a stellar lineup of authors, many of which would appear on a short list of the best minds not only in their respective technologies, but in maintenance and reliability as a whole. I’d like to welcome Keith Mobley into the Uptime community, as he shares his first article in a continuing series for us in the Reliability section. He explains what reliability excellence actually is, and outlines what it takes to get there. The feature article by Ron Moore, John Schultz and José Wilkins should provide plenty of food for thought as it delves into a technique to quantify a plant’s hidden capacity, that is how much more could the plant produce if its assets were utilized to their full potential. This is essential information in making sound strategic business decisions, and could help save many companies millions of dollars by avoiding expenditures on new capital. Going green is the hip thing (and the right thing to do) today. How much greener can a company get than by investing in their current assets to get the additional production they need instead of building more capacity? Not only would they be going green, but they would realize more green on their bottom line. And everyone likes that shade of green. I hope you enjoy this issue. As always, thank you for reading. We appreciate your support, and hope you find value within these pages.
