Best Lubrication Program – Gallatin Steel Gallatin Steel Company is a joint venture between Dofasco, Inc. and Gerdau Ameristeel. Construction of our Compact Strip Production facility began in 1993. Gallatin began its start-up operations as one of the most advanced, environmentally-safe mini-mills in the world in the second quarter of 1995. Since then, they have achieved the ISO 9001, ISO 17025, and the ISO/TS 16949 (the highest international quality benchmark for manufacturers) certifications. Gallatin Steel’s team consists of Operations, Maintenance, and Contractors. Each group plays a very important role in making the program a success. Gallatin Steel’s manufacturing facility is located on the Ohio River in Gent, KY. Gallatin Steel’s manufacturing facility features a twin-shell DC electric arc furnace, a ladle metallurgy facility, a thin-slab continuous caster and a six-stand hot finishing mill. Producing coils up to 1050 PIW from 42.5 to 64 inches wide at various gauge and grades, Gallatin tailor makes its products to satisfy its customers’ needs. The Gallatin Steel PdM Team accomplishes their award winning PdM work with a combination of in-house staff and contracted services with Timken Reliability Services. This success of this collaboration is evidenced by Gallatin being a repeat PdM Program of the Year winner. Last year the team won the Best Overall Program Award. Gallatin Steel currently has over 400 employees and is proud to have won an award as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Kentucky in 2005, 2006 and 2007. They currently produce more than 1.5 million tons of hot band coils on an annual basis. Best Motor Diagnostics Program – Allison Transmission Allison Transmission, Inc (Allison) is the premier global provider of commercial duty automatic transmissions and hybrid propulsion systems. Allison products are specified by over 250 of the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers and are used in many market sectors including bus, refuse, fire, construction, distribution, military and specialty applications. Founded in 1915, the Allison business is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A. and employs 3,600 people. Regional headquarters with dedicated support staff are located in China, The Netherlands, Brazil and Japan. With a global presence in 80 countries, Allison has over 1,500 distributor and dealer locations. Allison generates annual revenues in excess of $2 billion. One especially impressive result from the Allison Transmission program was the drastic reduction in down time of the production machinery, including the reduction in the percentage of motors sent out for repair that had no problems from 18% in 2001 to less than 1% now. Completing Root Cause Analysis on every failed motor that goes to the motor repair vendor is something that many other programs are not doing. This step is essential so organizations can identify repeated failures on like motors. The Throughput Workshops that Allison conducts is also an item that is particularly notable. These workshops bring together a team of cross functional employees for 3 days as they: identify road blocks, rank them and conduct root cause analysis to help resolve the problems. A time line is given to complete the problem resolution and weekly meetings are conducted to keep the program on track. A study is then conducted comparing the before and after results to measure the success. october/november 2008 20
