the next “next great era” “This is an extraordinary time for HM Science. Students are electing science courses in unprecedented numbers. Our labs are brimming with enthusiastic students who want to take as much science as they can, and they motivate us on the faculty to develop new and engaging ways to learn. Our engineering team is number one in the nation. More students than ever want to do independent research, write for our science publication, and join our Science Olympiad and Physics Olympiad groups. There’s great synergy among students, faculty and administration. Our students and our department have never been stronger. All this is galvanizing for me and everyone in HM Science.” Dr. Jeff Weitz, Upper Division science teacher A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Those days, for Tom Kelly, often start at dawn, when a quick look at his Blackberry or computer only hints at the dozens of emails and texts that have accumulated overnight from every imaginable part of the Horace Mann School community and beyond. The day includes sending his own daughter, Emma, off to the Lower Division with an encouraging word, symbolizing the particular balance Dr. Kelly has learned to build at into his own relationship with Horace Mann as both an administrator and a parent. A favorite activity for this Head of School is walking through the halls and classrooms of every Division of Horace Mann, Nursery through Upper, and of course, the beautiful John Dorr Nature Laboratory. But, when it comes to the Lower Division, Dr. Kelly avoids whichever floor his daughter’s current grade is on. While he scrupulously follows her studies, conferences with teachers are the realm of his wife, Dr. Rachel Kelly, a distinguished educator in her own right, and at Horace Mann, a mom. Dr. Kelly’s day will continue with meetings with faculty members, students, Division Heads, the Administrative Council, or a Board member downtown, and a look at the updates on Horace Mann’s website that he was involved in creating. The website is a particular source of pride because it brings so much of what Horace Mann School does and stands for into public light, with content more accessible than it ever was before. The day will round off with attendance at a Horace Mann School alumni event in the evening, a meeting with one of the many Bronx neighborhood civic boards Dr. Kelly takes part in on behalf of Horace Mann, such as Riverdale Seniors or the Bronx Center for Science and Math, or with a dinner for faculty or HM visitors at his home. “I try to be as accessible as I can,” said Dr. Kelly. “Each year about 3,500 people come through our house for different events.” A highlight of Dr. Kelly’s day, nearly every day, comes early on, when he retreats to his library-like and welcoming office to teach his AP Psychology class. It’s then that the Blackberry shuts off and none of its scores of phone calls is allowed to interrupt the flow of instruction and conversation. And it’s then that Dr. Tom Kelly, renews his own energy that fuels his passion for serving as Horace Mann’s ninth Head of School. “I love teaching Horace Mann students. By the time they get to my class in their junior or senior year they have experienced years of a Horace Mann education. I have the opportunity to see how powerful that education is. Our discussions are engaged, exciting, and the photo by Marcio Moreiera “During these five years, Tom Kelly has taught me how to find the greatness in my children, in myself as a parent and in the people around us who make up the Horace Mann family. I continue to marvel over this jewel of an educator, and watch how, everyday, he and Rachel embrace our teachers, our staff, our families and our students with the same energy and compassion that they do their own 10 year old child. That is a special gift, for which I am grateful. As an HM trustee, I am proud to call Tom a mentor, a leader and a friend” One of Dr. Kelly’s favorite roles at Horace Mann School is that of parent to Emma Kelly ’18.
