news of the school Valedictorian Alexander (Hill) Wyrough ’10 Graduates John Myhal, Leslie Crosdale, and Rena Branson celebrate with the rest of the Class of 2010 Horace Mann School Celebrates Commencement for 177 in the Class of 2010 J une 9, 2010 was a day of promise at Horace Mann School. Commencement day for Horace Mann’s Upper Division, that second Wednesday of June was a time for the 177 graduates in the Class of 2010 to reflect on the promise they had set out to fulfill when they entered this School four or six or even 12 years before. It was also a day to envision the promise of the future, as these students who had shared their education and adventures together branched out to colleges and universities across the country. And it was a day for the graduates to promise to keep in touch with one another, and with their School. Joined by their parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends who had supported them along their high school way, and by the teachers, administrators, coaches and staff members who taught and guided them over the years, it was, above all, a day for the graduates to participate in the reflections of those who addressed them, and to celebrate one another. Dr. Glenn Wallach, who had served as the class members’ grade dean since they entered the Upper Division, greeted the graduates and their families. He remarked that it was gratifying to have been able to develop deep relationships with each class member because of academic restructuring at Horace Mann that has deans remaining as advisors to one class throughout its entire four years in the Division. The history teacher cited Henry Adams in summing up the students’ educational experience, saying, “All your classes, papers, projects, experiments, community service, performances, games, publications—all of your relationships with adults and with each other—learning to be kind, learning not to take for granted the people whose work made it possible for you to be here—these are all pieces of building a life, in which,” as Adams saw it “everything had value for education…” Greeting the Class of 2010 Horace Mann School Board of Trustees Chair Steve Friedman ’72 noted that theirs was the fifth Class to graduate during the time that Dr. Tom Kelly served as Horace Mann Head of School. Friedman asked those gathered to join him in expressing appreciation for Dr. Kelly’s “extraordinary dedication to this School, especially to you, the students.” Eschewing words of advice traditionally heard at graduations Friedman instead explored with the class “how American culture marks high school graduation through music, citing lyrics from such classics as Baz Luhrmann’s “Sunscreen Song,” Vitamin C’s “Graduation Day” /”Friends Forever,” Green Day’s “Good Riddance”, (or “The Time of Your Life” ) and what he called “the some- 24 Horace Mann Magazine Fall/Winter 2010-11 photos by Bruce Fuller
