alumni news Homecoming 2010 was a time for celebration and fun for all ages. By noon the patio outside Fisher Hall was packed with picnickers under umbrellatopped tables who enjoyed hot dogs and burgers, chili and barbecued spare ribs, ice cream, candy and taffy apples, huge cookies and, for the dedicated, healthy salad selections. Noontime saw members of the 50th reunion Class of 1960 gathered for an elegant luncheon under the tent outside the Dr. Kelly's home. The alumni, who had traveled from distances near and far, filled one another in on their lives since they’d last met, passed around a Mannikin yearbook from their Class, and teased each other over changes in appearance since the day each posed for those commencement portraits. Other alumni enjoyed an art history lecture given by Horace Mann School art history teacher Avram Schlesinger ’90, who also happened to be celebrating his class’ 20th reunion. Still other alumni toured the buildings they had once occupied as students. Guided through Tillinghast Hall by current HM Student Ambassadors the alumni pointed out different rooms and hallways where they had studied and enjoyed good times. The annual Dan Alexander ’49 Alumni Soccer Game later in the day drew alumni soccer players from four decades to enjoy another go at the goal. As the stunning day slipped into sparkling night alums from the classes of 1945, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 gathered at the Waldorf Hotel for reunion cocktail and dinner receptions organized by the Horace Mann School Alumni House and Development Office. (Reunion-year classes of 1950 and 1970 had scheduled events for different days.) Some alums brought snapshots from their Horace Mann School days. Class of 1985 reunion committee members had sent a survey to classmates in the weeks before the event, and took turns reading the results that recalled teachers, classmates, adventures, and music popular during their days at Horace Mann, to a room filled with appreciative laughter. One legendary classmate who couldn’t make it to the reunion from his home in Los Angeles appeared via video, rapping out an anthem for many members of the class. As classmates dispersed for after-parties into the night, and arranged additional gettogethers, it was clear that Homecoming 2010 did not end on this beautiful day. E-mail addresses, websites and Facebook pages exchanged throughout the event would soon be put to use by Horace Manners from across the generations who promised to reconnect, stay in touch, and create anew the memories that Homecoming 2010 was all about.
