Domestic Diversity By Lowell Beveridge, Jr. ’48 Mill City Press, January 2010 In Domestic Diversity, and Other Subversive Activities Lowell Beveridge, Jr. ’48 tells a fascinating story— his own. Beveridge (known as Pete in his days at Horace Mann School) came from an extended family of politically conservative, Ivy League-educated teachers who summer together on the coast of Maine. In 1954, fresh out of Harvard, and a conscripted private in the U.S. Army, Beveridge took a bold step, marrying an African American woman from Harlem at the height of the McCarthy era when the author was already on the government’s radar as a suspected Communist. A personal and family saga that unfolded at the center of what became a crucial and convulsive stage in the political and cultural development of the United States, the story is told simply, with clarity and grace. It’s a moving story of a search for love and peace, of a family torn apart, and a country in the throes of change. about the child’s life today and in the future to help parents discover whether their child can live on their own, how to ensure a sound financial future for children-becomingadults with autism, learn how to handle bullying, puberty, college, employment and more. Now that many children with autism are reaching adulthood, the book aims to help parents answer such questions as “Where do we go from here?” “Where will my child live? How will they get along in the real world if I’m not around?” The book includes chapters on community, safety, employment, school, independent living, diet and nutrition, fitness, wills and trusts, and more. It is written as both a love story and a practical guide with strategies to help children on both ends of the autism spectrum survive and thrive in the real world. Alumni author Bill Davis became an autism advocate as a parent. Speaking for and representing his son, Chris, Davis quickly became a stellar advocate for children and adults with autism. The author of Breaking Autism’s Barriers: A Father’s Story and Dangerous Encounters: Avoiding Perilous Situations With Autism Davis speaks throughout the country, at universities and before Congress. news they offer is that by being prepared, a person or company can make sure its online image reflects reality. The authors should know. They are respectively CEO and chief privacy officer at ReputationDefender, the company Fertik founded in 2006 as a personal response to the reputation-bashing that was increasing online. Likening the Internet to the new frontier of the American Wild West, the authors explore the challenges of being in a world that is instant, permanent, and anonymous. They also provide valuable insight into the quandary of Google Truth and different types of Internet attacks. Particularly arresting is their analysis of why people attack each other online. Chapters on how to measure this type of damage, including how to do an online reputation audit, are useful. The authors stress the benefits of a proactive defense and show how to recover after the damage has been done. Publishers Weekly described the book as “Full of invaluable information that readers will be very grateful to have… this book explains the rules and provides the tools for overcoming online attacks and regaining a positive reputation.” Alarming and essential reading in this day and age, Library Journal praised the book for its insights into the sociological impacts of web 2.0.
