Director of Development letter from the director of development riendships, some of the ones we form in school, can seem all-too-fleeting when recalled from a few years’ perspective. You know the ones I mean: Friends you shared great discussions with in class, or hung out with on long trips home from away games. But, those graduation-day promises to always be in touch? You wonder where they went. And you wonder, too, what it would be like to meet those friends again after, say, 20 years. That was my question on the evening of October 2, 2010 when my class, the Horace Mann School Class of 1990, gathered at the Waldorf Astoria for its 20th reunion. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one wondering. But as former classmates filled the room, we had the answer. We realized how much we’d missed one another, and even more—how much we mean to one another, for the friendships we made in classes, on playing fields, in labs, art studios, on stage, or just hanging out—those friendships form the foundations of our lives today. While time and distance may have divided us, we learned that reunion night that we still share the goal of pursuing paths of meaning in our careers and personal lives, and of celebrating our collective humor and intellectual curiosity as we had two decades before. As Director of the Horace Mann School Alumni House and Development Office, I was involved with organizing this night of reunions, not just for our class, but for classes from 1945 through 2005. I thus had the opportunity to visit reunions taking place simultaneously down the Waldorf halls. The bits of conversation I caught confirmed that this realization was not our Class’ alone. Whether the talk was of newly-launched careers, of mid-career accomplishments and family updates, or recent retirement to communityservice and other pursuits, our adventures took on special significance when shared with long-ago friends. Too often, we leave a reunion as we once departed graduation, with phone numbers and promises to stay in touch. But those lives of pursuit can also be busy, thwarting the best intentions to reconnect. That is why we in the Alumni House and Development Office have redoubled our efforts to help our community of alumni stay connected with each other and with our School. To this end, our office is pleased to announce the creation of the position of Director of Alumni Relations and the appointment of Greg Zuroski to fulfill its goals. Many of you have already met Greg Zuroski, for, as soon as he joined our Office he began bringing alumni together in new and creative ways. He is now our liaison to the Horace Mann School Alumni Council, and has already been involved with organizing Homecoming, reunions, and the Horace Mann School Award for Distinguished Achievement dinner. He also traveled to Yale University at the invitation of Horace Mann School alumni there who wanted to be in touch with HM, and organized a first-ever Veterans Day dinner in Manhattan to honor veterans and those currently serving our country in the military from within the HM community. An accomplished professional in independent school education and community relations Greg has a deep connection to Horace Mann School: He’s the father of a Horace Mann School alumna, and is married to Patricia Zuroski, known by many from her former position as Head of our Nursery Division. Patricia now serves HM as Director of Diversity Initiatives. We look forward to connecting and reconnecting with all of you through the exciting events Greg Zuroski has in the works. I, for one, eagerly anticipate filling in the spaces between reunion years with these opportunities. Your friendship is too valuable to miss.
