This fall she started at HM’s 'big school on the hill' in Riverdale. Time certainly does fly. Last year I celebrated my 60th HM reunion.’” Congratulations to Austin Heyman who was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame in October 2009. Irwin Block opened an exhibit of his work on February 19, 2010 at Photographic Solutions in Norwalk, CT. The show, entitled “Poetic Visions” ran through March 26, 2010. A highlight of the Columbia show was a discussion entitled “Two Men Laughing” between Edward Koren and Jules Feiffer, whose six degrees of separation includes being a parent of Halley Feiffer ’03. 1950 The May 2010 Purdue University Calumet Chronicle featured an article about the distinguished career of Prof. Robert L. Selig who has been teaching English and Philosophy at Purdue University’s Calumet campus since 1967. Prof. Selig has written books and short stories. The article noted that, inspired by his theater experience at Horace Mann School he thought of pursuing a career in acting, and has long combined acting into his literature courses. Noted the professor, “I particularly enjoy dramatizing literary texts and in that way combining the roles of teacher and actor—not just in drama courses.” 1952 Hugh Paul Gabriel is semi-retired and working as a clinical professor of psychiatry at NYU Medical School where he was formerly a tenured professor. 1953 The Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University featured an exhibit of drawings and prints by Edward Koren, a Distinguished Alumnus of both Horace Mann School and Columbia. Best known for his cartoons and covers for The New Yorker, Koren began his career as an artist for The Horace Mann Record, and then drew for The Jester at Columbia. The Luise Ross Gallery in Manhattan held a simultaneous exhibit, which featured work that ran the gamut from drawings for cartoons to what the artist refers to as his “Fine art or uptown stuff.” Both exhibits enabled lovers of Robert Tauber sent the following update: “I have just been appointed Chairman of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) Council on Ethics. We have hearings for dentists who have had complaints against them for NYSDA code of Ethics violations. If we find the complaints are valid we will discipline the dentist. There are 13 components in the state and each one sends a member to the council meetings. I am a past President of the 9th District Dental Association which comprises Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties.” Martin Sokol wrote: “Just completed two publicly-elected terms as president of Great Neck Library during which time I started a $25 million building project that has been stalled for close to 15 years and hopefully will be presented as a public referendum end of this year. My daughter and son now run the family leather business which is celebrating its 83rd year. We sell leather to almost every type of manufacturer, including furniture, saddles and even cowboy chaps. I go to the office which makes my wife of 47 years happy and I’m actively involved on several boards—with Zionist Organization of America (Z.O.A.), Committee for Accuracy in Mideast Reporting in America (CAMERA), Great Neck Arts Center.” Martin also wrote that he is busy growing castor bean plants in the summer, and noted: “What did we learn at HM? ‘Grow old, the best is yet to come.’ Well it’s here.” 1954 Sports Hall of Fame in 2001, and recognized with the Maccabi movement’s Yakir Award. HM remembers him as a high-scorer on the Lions’ varsity basketball team, and one of the School’s three varsity baseball pitching aces. Harris Brodsky writes: “The Class of 1955 continues to have its periodic luncheon meetings at the Harvard Club. All are welcome.” Dick Traum was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on April 18, 2010. He was honored for his work helping athletes overcome disabilities to enable them to compete in and enjoy sports, and particularly track. Alan Freedman ’74 is director of the Hall of Fame. Traum is founder of the Achilles Track Club which assists disabled athletes. Achilles honored Horace Mann School for its support of the organization, both by alumni who serve on the Achilles Board, and by students who have volunteered at Achilles events. HM Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly accepted the award at a dinner in November 2010. 1958 1959 1955 Roy Salomon was named honorary co-chair of the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel. A former president of Maccabi Canada, the appointment by the Maccabi World Union capped more than 40 years of involvement by Salomon in the Maccabi movement, beginning in 1969 when he was a member of the Canadian men’s Maccabi basketball team. Roy was inducted into the Montreal Jewish Wilbur Hartshorn writes; “My wife and I had a great time at the 50th Reunion (2009). I left the campus even more proud of my School than when I first graduated.” Peter Low published an incisive article in the winter 2010 issue of Financial History, the magazine of the Museum of American Finance. His piece, “The Northern Pacific Panic of 1901” tells how the struggle for control of the Northern Pacific Railroad by JP Morgan and James Hill against Edward H. Harriman and Jacob Schiff set off the stock market panic of the era.
