class notes 1961 Congratulations to Burton Haimes who was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in August 2009. 1962 late, promote and publicize”Very Large-Scale Conversations”, to inspire discussion of shared commonalities of imagination and creativity across all fields of knowledge, including the expressive arts, and to encourage the use of creativity to bridge communication wherever possible. Prof. Baldwin invites all to join the conversation on this site. William Cooper sent in the sad news of the passing of George Choderker. Wrote William: “I regret to inform you of the passing of George Choderker last November 18, 2009. I had the opportunity to reconnect with George (after 30 years) upon moving to Los Angeles three years ago, which reconfirmed my impression of him as the smartest HM student who never studied. His wily wit was never an issue. Remember the assembly when he yelled out “play ball” after the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner?” 1968 1963 Marc Hofstadter’s latest book Rising at 5 AM was recently published by Latitude Press of Pittsburgh, California (see “Bookshelf” p. 47) Prof. Hofstadter has had his poems published in over 60 magazines. He taught in three universities and currently lives in the retirement community of Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, California. Ken Browne’s latest film “Look! I’m in College” tells the story of four autistic young men who study in a special program at Pace University, where they are integrated into the classroom. The film received wide media coverage including on NBC in NY, which featured an interview with Browne http://www.nbcnewyork.com/station/as-seen-on/_Look__I_m_in_ College___New_York.html It also won the 2010 Paul Robeson Award for best short documentary at the Newark Black Film Festival was the Official Selection: 2009 Harlem Film Festival. More on www.kbprods.com. 1965 Robert Brookshire has been living in Southern California since 1979. He says he misses New York. However, the California climate, along with his 16-year-old daughter Devon, keep him young. Devon is an outstanding basketball player who hopes to go to UCLA or Stanford. Jeff Brosk sold a wall sculpture to Evelyn Lauder for the art collection at the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Neil Baldwin is Director of the new Creative Research Center (CRC) (www. montclair.edu/creativeresearch) at Montclair State University, where he is a professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance. A widely-published cultural historian and critic, Dr. Baldwin also serves as Co-Chair of the NYU Biography Seminar. The CRC is a born-digital, dynamic, nimble, open-source, collaborative space—a Web forum to stimu- Jeff Wachtel wrote: “Celebrated my 16th anniversary with my amazing wife Sheryl in November. She is a photographer, and is on the board of the Zimmer Children’s Museum. Our two kids, daughter Emily and son Jesse are now 12 and 10 respectively. I’m fighting the good fight to keep Emily off Facebook for as long as possible. She is a great storyteller and loves acting and fashion. Jesse is a great athlete and a sensitive soul (both of which might surprise anyone who knew me at Horace Mann). I was promoted to President of Programming at USA Network last year. I’ve been at USA for eight years. We’ve launched a bunch of shows, including “Monk”, “Burn Notice”, “Royal Pains”, “Psych”, “In Plain Sight” and most recently “White Collar”. I started teaching a class 1970 at AFI (“Running the Show: Storytelling in Television”). Life is better than I could ever have imagined. (knock wood!) Richard Trifan’s latest work is “The Global Opera” (www.richardtrifan.com). A story about virtue, the opera is written in five acts, with each act sung in a different language: German, Italian, Russian, Hebrew and Chinese. The panoply of country settings, cultures, and time periods are intended to universalize the concept. Trifan, a noted composer who has orchestrated for and performed with musicians ranging from Bette Midler and The Village People to classical greats, returned to the well of his Horace Mann School experience in producing the opera. Noting that he wrote the Russian act himself, because he “learned Russian at Horace Mann” he turned to classmate Neil Feldman for help with the Hebrew part of the opera. In his non-musical life Richard’s company, Trifan Associates, LLC, specializes in global enterprise systems. Trifan also worked with another classmate, Victor Masayesva, Jr. composing some of the score for Victor’s film “Paatuwaqatsi—Water, Land and Life” which had its world premiere as the opening night film of the Talking Stick Film Festival in June 2008. This lyrical documentary follows the pace of a 78-year old man and a 14-year old girl as they run along a 2,000 mile route to Mexico. Masayesva is a longtime leader in the struggle to preserve the Hopi aquifer in New Mexico in conflict with the mining industry. Dr. Frank Lowe continues to keep classmates up-to-date on one another’s activities. The Class of 1970 celebrated its 40th reunion during the weekend of October 23, 2010 with a large turnout of classmates, some of whom scheduled visits to New York in time for the occasion. Mike Marx was among those who came in from California. Wrote Mike before coming to New York: “I am still working at Jenkins Goodman Neuman & Hamilton LLP in San Francisco, keeping the world safe for architects, engineers and selected contractors. Retirement remains an elusive goal. Pauline is the Chief Assistant Treasurer for the City and County of San Francisco, keeping its financial world safe for all of its political and cultural characters. Miriam graduated from Tufts with a Masters in Bio-medical Engineering and a Bachelors in Bio-technical Engineering. She has been working for two years at a medical device Horace Mann Magazine Fall/Winter 2010-11 53 http://www.richardtrifan.com http://www.nbcnewyork.com/station/as-seen-on/_Look__I_m_in_College___New_York.html http://www.nbcnewyork.com/station/as-seen-on/_Look__I_m_in_College___New_York.html http://www.nbcnewyork.com/station/as-seen-on/_Look__I_m_in_College___New_York.html http://www.kbprods.com http://www.montclair.edu/creativeresearch http://www.montclair.edu/creativeresearch
