H Memorials memorials was the son of the comic strip pioneer Rudolph Dirks, renowned for creating “The Katzenjammer Kids”, an early comic-strip serial. The strip evolved into “The Captain and the Kids” which John Dirks collaborated on with his father in the 1950s, taking over the series in 1958, and continuing it until 1979. Dirks was also a noted sculptor, specializing in mixed metal fountains, installing hundreds around the world, at museums, multiple gallery shows and private collections. He is survived by his sister Barbara Dirks of Brattleboro, VT. orace Mann School mourns the deaths of the following members of our community. Koehler Pforzheimer ’27 Longtime Horace Mann School Supporter and Philanthropist With deep sadness Horace Mann School notes the passing of Carol Koehler Pforzheimer ’27 at her home in Stuart, Fla. on July 25, 2010, at the age of 100. Carol Pforzheimer led a life devoted to service. A graduate of Barnard College and New York Medical College/Pace University, during World War II she served as director of nurse’s aides at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. As a volunteer, she played important roles at Elizabeth Seton College, Mt. Sinai School of Nursing, Pace University, White Plains Hospital, Radcliffe College, the New York Public Library, the Westchester County Council of Social Agencies and the Martin County Library in Florida, where she volunteered until the age of 98. A trustee and guiding spirit, she was instrumental in developing these institutions. Married for 65 years to Carl Pforzheimer ’24, who predeceased her in 1996, as vice president of the Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation Carol Pforzheimer helped many organizations in her long philanthropic career. Horace Mann Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly and Board of Trustees Chair Steve Friedman ’72 recalled her as: “An accomplished and principled individual and stalwart and caring friend of this institution. Her thoughtful involvement for over 75 years as a committed alumna, devoted parent and generous benefactor provides a continuing source of inspiration. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to her son, Carl H. Pforzheimer III ’54 and Chair Emeritus, HM Board of Trustees, and his wife Elizabeth, her daughter Nancy Aronson and husband Edgar Aronson ’52, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.” Carol Pforzheimer was also preceded in death by her brother, Edwin J. Koehler Jr. ’18 and sister, Grace L. Breslauer ’18. George Wendell Phillips ’35 Career Foreign Service Officer and Musician George Wendell Phillips ’35, a career foreign service officer in the Agency for International Development (AID) died on Feb. 15, 2010 at his home in Stevensville, Md. He was 91. Horace Mann School extends condolences. A 1939 graduate of Harvard College Phillips was a member and president of the Harvard Glee Club. During World War II he served as an Air Force flight engineer in the Pacific and flew on 27 missions for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he earned a masters’ degree in government from Syracuse University and began his career with the Atomic Energy Commission. He joined AID when the Alliance for Progress was established during the Kennedy Administration. In 1965, while working for AID, he moved with his family to Lima, Peru, returning to the Washington D.C. area in 1969. Phillips retired from U.S. government work in 1981, and then spent 10 years as executive director of the D.C. Partners of Brasilia, a non-profit cultural and development partnership. An avid birdwatcher, fisherman, opera lover, and traveler, George Phillips had a lifelong passion for music. He played both classical and jazz clarinet, and for many years directed church choirs in Bethesda, Md. Until the time of his death, he was singing with the Annapolis Chorale, and directing the Chesapeake Men’s Singers in Stevensville. Survivors include Mary Phillips of Stevensville, Md., three children, two step-children, a sister, Ruth Arent Phillips ’39, two grandsons and three step-grandchildren. Joan Goldwasser Schine ’40 Service Learning and School Integration Pioneer Horace Mann School extends condolences upon the death of Joan Goldwasser Schine ’40, on September 18, 2010 in her Westport, CT home following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 87. Joan Schine graduated from The Horace Mann School for Girls and Smith College. She and her husband Harold L. Schine settled in Westport, where they raised their four children. Dirks, who studied English and fine arts at Yale University, began having illustrations published in Collier’s and The Saturday Evening Post around the time of his graduation in 1939.
