memorials longtime chair of the Westport Board of Education. During the late 1960s and early 70s she was instrumental in bringing Project Concern, a program that enrolled students from the Bridgeport schools, into Westport schools. She successfully fought back attempts at a recall election to remove her from the Board of Education because of her staunch support of integration. In the late 1970s she became a pioneer in the field of service learning, leading the National Center for Service Learning in New York. She served as consultant on service learning to schools and foundations and edited one of the first books in the field, Service Learning, published in 1997. In addition to her career in education Schine read widely, attended theater in New York City, and played doubles tennis, often with her sister, Marjorie Goldwasser Wyler ’32, who predeceased her. Joan Schine is survived by her children, Judith Seltz, James Schine, Robert Schine and Beth Schine, and by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and by her brother Prof. Edwin L. Goldwasser ’36 of Urbana, Ill. Charles and his late brother, Robert Miller, acquired D.H. Blair & Co., a Wall Street securities firm, where Charles was the managing partner into the early 1970s. In the mid-1970s, Charles returned to school and obtained advanced training at Columbia and the Postgraduate Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and practiced as a psychoanalyst from the early 1980s on. The Miller family lived in Great Neck, N.Y. from the 1950s to the 70s where Charles was active in PTA, Little League, and Democratic Party politics, and pursued tennis, fishing, photography, bridge and golf, making many friends through these pursuits. He embraced life with his unique smile and New York humor. He is survived by his wife Madelyne Bailey of Manhattan; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Miller-Katz and Gordon Katz, son Burton Miller, daughter Rebecca Miller, stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Mark Bailey and Rory Kennedy and Paul Bailey, a godson and five grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his first wife Thelma Levine Miller. Norman B. Yarmis ’40 CPA and Volunteer Horace Mann School expresses condolences upon the death of Norman B. Yarmis ’40 on Feb. 13, 2010 in Boca Raton, Fla. at age 86. A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania Yarmis headed his own CPA company and was a lifetime member of the AICPA. He devoted his later years to volunteering, particularly at the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach, FL. He is survived by his wife Harriett, children Jonathan Yarmis and Binnie Birstein, and Abigail Smith and husband Herbert Smith, and four grandchildren. Bette Foster Burson ’43 Business-Woman and Active Volunteer The Horace Mann School community is saddened by the death of Bette Foster Burson ’43 of Scarsdale, N.Y. on Sept. 16, 2010 at age 85, six months after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. A graduate of Horace Mann School for Girls she attended the University of North Carolina Woman’s College at Greensboro, and Katherine Gibbs School in New York, and was office manager for the predecessor firm to Burson-Marsteller for five years. She was married for almost 63 years to Harold Burson, founder of the Burson-Marsteller global public relations firm and traveled with him extensively for over 50 years, visiting the company’s offices and clients on five continents. A life member of the Scarsdale Woman’s Club Bette Burson was the club’s longtime representative to the Westchester Federation of Woman’s Clubs. She was also a board member of the Center for Preventive Psychiatry, the Edgemont Community Council and a Cub Scout den mother. The Scarsdale Woman’s Club named the Bette Burson Library in her honor in April 2010. Along with Harold Burson, Bette Burson is survived by Scott and Wendy Liebow Burson, Mark and Ellen Jones Burson, and five grandchildren. Dr. Ross Cone ’41 Dedicated Physician With condolences we report the death of Dr. Ross Cone ’41 on March 25, 2010 in Colorado. A graduate of Oberlin College and Duke University School of Medicine and a Korean War veteran Dr. Cone is remembered as a dedicated physician, a patron of the arts, and a volunteer on behalf of nature. He is survived by his wife Bernie and family. Charles J. Miller ’41 Securities Firm Founder and Psychoanalyst Horace Mann School regrets to report the passing of Charles J. Miller ’41 of Manhattan who died on July 22, 2010 at age 87. A graduate of New York University Miller later earned his MS degree from Columbia University. A WWII combat veteran who served with distinction in Europe, after the war, he took on a top position with his family business, I. Miller & Sons, the renowned maker of “beautiful” women’s shoes. He was involved in all aspects of the business, especially shoe design. Following the sale of the company in 1959, William M. Heineman ’43 Textile Broker Horace Mann School expresses condolences on the passing of William M. Heineman ’43, of Westport, CT at age 84 on Feb. 21, 2010. Bill Heineman went to Williams College and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a partner for 55 years in the textile brokerage firm Heineman & Co.
