Sanford Friedman ’45 Ground-Breaking Novelist Horace Mann School regrets to report the passing of Sanford Friedman ’45, on April 20, 2010. Friedman earned a BFA from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and then served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer in Korea where he was awarded a Bronze Star. A gifted writer, he was a precocious playwright before publishing his four ground-breaking novels Totempole, A Haunted Woman, Still Life, and Rip Van Winkle. Totempole is considered a classic early gay-themed novel of the last century. In 1965 Friedman was given the O. Henry Award from the Society of Arts & Sciences for his story “Ocean”, which formed part of Totempole. A friend of many noted arts and literary figures Friedman’s work has been anthologized in dozens of books, particularly focusing on early gay literature in America. Sanford Friedman taught writing at the Julliard School and at SAGE. He is survived by his companion Dr. James Bonczek, his brother, writer B.H. Friedman ’43, a niece and a nephew. for stars including Marlene Dietrich, Tony Bennett, and Diahann Carroll, who described Meyers as “a magnificent talent, vocal mentor, and outstanding musician.” Meyers became a specialist in voice-overs, and one of the biggest names in the field in Hollywood. He worked in commercial production, ran TeleTalent, Inc. and mentored many famous students as a voice-over instructor and through his website. He is survived by his wife Pamela, and many friends. S. Robert Weltz ’47 Attorney, NYSE Member, and Orchid Grower S. Robert Weltz ’47 passed away at his home in Santa Barbara, Ca. on March 21, 2010 at age 80. Horace Mann School expresses condolences. A graduate of NYU’s School of Business and Finance Weltz received a law degree from Fordham University and was an active member of the New York Stock Exchange for over 50 years. Robert Weltz had many interests, including books, golf, and food, but was best known for his prize-winning orchid collection, one of the greatest private collections in the world. A past member of the American Orchid Society Board and Director of the Santa Barbara Orchid Show, he was featured in a “60 Minutes” interview by Leslie Stahl” who called Weltz the “consummate orchid grower.” He was a member of the Los Angeles Confrerie du Tastevin and the Commanderie de Bordeaux in Santa Barbara, where he served as regent. He is survived by his wife Gloria Weltz, daughters Laurie and Christina Weltz, and Catherine Beurnier, and five grandchildren. Howard M. Fox ’47 Investment Manager Horace Mann School extends condolences on the passing of Howard M. Fox '47 on Feb. 27, 2010. A 1950 graduate of The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania Fox worked as a manager of high-end portfolios at Wall Street investment firms for more than 30 years, after serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He began his career at Goldman Sachs in Philadelphia and in 1960 became a partner at P. F. Fox and Co. in New York, joining the firm his father, P. Fred Fox, had founded. In 1975 Howard Fox went to work for Carret and Co., and retired in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine (Ziegenfuss) Fox; two sisters, Dr. Renee C. Fox and Rosa Gellert; two daughters, Mindy L. Fox and Susan Fox Hallenbeck; a son-in-law, Brian Hallenbeck; and a granddaughter. Henry M. Bangser ’48 A Tireless Volunteer By Robert (Bob) Sandler ’48 Warren B. Meyers ’47 Musical Arranger and Voice-over Specialist Horace Mann School regrets to note the passing of Warren B. Meyers ’47 on July 24, 2010 in Los Angeles. As a student at Horace Mann, Meyers distinguished himself as a musician. He then studied at Julliard and earned his BA from Columbia, and worked as a musical arranger Henry M. Bangser ’48 of Waccuabuc died on June 14, 2010 at the age of 80. He was the husband of Rita Blonder Bangser, whom he met when he was at Horace Mann and she was at Fieldston. Following the Navy he worked at H. Maimin Co., a manufacturer of cloth cutting machines for the apparel industry. Mr. Bangser was a longtime volunteer and advocate for the National MS Society. He was recognized by the organization in 2008 when he was inducted into the Society’s Volunteer Hall of Fame. A gifted craftsman, Mr. Bangser enjoyed making handmade wooden toys for children. Each year he delivered dozens of toys to the pediatric ward of Northern Westchester Hospital. Each toy was emblazoned with Bangser’s stamp, “Handcrafted by Grandfather.” Until his passing, Bangser also remained an active alumnus of Lafayette College, and maintained contact with his former Navy officers, with whom he served for three years. “Honor, duty, ethics, and above all, a deep commitment to his family defined him,” his family said. “He was a perfect gentleman and dedicated himself to charitable causes.” According to his famHorace Mann Magazine Fall/Winter 2010-11 61
