philanthropy and you Horace Mann School Welcomes a Welcoming Presence as the Alumni House and Development Office’s Libby Barge Brings New Participants into the Life of the School K eeping Horace Mann School’s alumni connected to the life of their School today is a top priority for the HM Alumni House and Development Office. Coordinating Horace Mann School's essential Annual Fund is another significant role the office pursues. Last year the Office welcomed a key participant in these activities, whose energy and ideas contributed greatly to the success of these efforts, and as a result, to the very life of Horace Mann. Many readers have already met her: she’s Libby Barge, Assistant Director of Annual Giving. Libby joined the Office in August 2009, shortly before the start of the 2009-2010 school year, and hit the ground running. Within her first days at Horace Mann School she began working on the Annual Fund Volunteer Thank You and Kick-off evening in September, where she got the chance to personally meet many of the alumni and parents who volunteer on behalf of the Horace Mann School Annual Fund, and with whom she would be in touch throughout the year. By the end of the last Annual Fund year, and into the current campaign (well before Horace Mann Magazine took this opportunity to formally introduce Libby to our readers) she had also helped organize all of the Office’s traditional activities to bring Alumni together, including Homecoming and reunions, and had worked with the Horace Mann School Alumni Council (HMAC) on such events as the Alumni Council Winter Gathering, and the HMAC’s annual spring benefit on behalf of the Student Assistance Fund. But, Libby’s focus is the Annual Fund. Central to assuring the strength of the Horace Mann School experience, in and out of the classroom, Annual Fund enriches the life of every student, every day. That’s why it’s significant to have every member of the Horace Mann School community participate in Annual Fund giving, from alumni to current families, and why Libby Barge has applied herself so enthusiastically to her work. And, it shows. The 20092010 AF campaign—the first in which she participated—set a new record. With the Horace Mann School community of alumni, faculty, parents, grandparents and friends participating in force. Logging a 10 percent increase in donors overall, alumni donors alone recorded a welcome 10 percent increase. Libby had a hand in boosting those figures. Reaching out to alumni from over the decades she rallied the alumni population, encouraging them to bring their talents and concern for Horace Mann School to the cause. The result was two dozen new Class Agents who reached out to their classmates on behalf of the Annual Fund. An energetic sports fan Libby created the Development Office’s first-ever “March Madness” competition that ran concurrent to college basketball’s exciting national event, and had Class Agents spurring their classmates on to up their Annual Fund giving and make it to the top brackets, and finally, “The Dance.” March also saw Libby organizing an event for younger alumni, that encouraged them to connect and reconnect with their School. Members of Classes of 1995 through 2005 were invited to meet and mingle informally at a Libby Barge-coordinated justafter-work cocktail gathering in midtown Manhattan. Dozens of young alums RSVPed to the evite Libby designed, and more joined the fun after being “texted” by their friends to drop in. The young alumni left thanking Barge for thinking of them specifically in planning the party, and suggesting more such events. November 2010 saw alumni gathering for another Libby-style party—a fund-raising phonathon at a popular NY club. Perhaps the best part of Libby’s own participation in the life of Horace Mann School is the thoughtfulness, good humor and good cheer she applies to her endeavors, and the obvious appreciation of all with whom she, herself, has connected. $ Horace Mann School Assistant Director of Annual Giving Libby Barge met with young alumni at a phonathon on behalf of the HM Annual Fund in November 2010. 64 Horace Mann Magazine Fall/Winter 2010-11 photo by Kristen Pietraszek
