the next “next great era” photo © VictoriaJacksonphoto.com photo © James Levine Photography Back in 2005, when Dr. Tom Kelly spent his first summer on the Horace Mann School campus as HM’s ninth Head of School, he took a moment to stand on the steps of Tillinghast Hall to imagine the possibilities of his coming years. Now, deeply immersed in his second-half decade as Head of School, Dr. Kelly no longer needs to imagine. Each day has brought its own reward. Above all, Dr. Kelly credits all that he has learned about Horace Mann, all that he has dreamed for the School, all that he has done toward guiding its positive direction, and all that he hopes to pursue in the future, to the guidance, wisdom, encouragement, support, and, above all, friendship of the people who make Horace Mann the School it is. Thus, in appreciation for all of the contributions of the Horace Mann School community, on the morning of Homecoming 2010, Dr. Kelly gathered a few dozen friends from his “Horace Mann Family” for a family portrait. Each individual represents a different aspect of life at Horace Mann School today, including alumni from as far back as 1952, Heads of each HM Division, deans, coaches, security officers, chefs, maintenance personnel, parents, staff members, student leaders, student athletes, students from Horace Mann School’s Nursery, Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions, members of the Horace Mann School Board of Trustees, department chairs and teachers of a host of subjects, representatives from student government and student publications, and administrators involved in admissions, student life, community service and community action, diversity, finance, technology, development, and alumni affairs. hen Dr. Tom Kelly arrived at Horace Mann School in the summer of 2005 he outlined a set of goals to guide his work as HM’s new Head of School. Looking back over his first five years at Horace Mann School Dr. Kelly can feel secure in knowing that he has met these goals— and then some. Anyone who has worked, taught, or studied with him during this time can surely agree. But while the Head of School may be entitled to enter check marks alongside his list, he would never cross the items off—especially not that last one about always being open to new ideas.
