Horace Mann - Spring 2010 - (Page 2)

Letters letters Horace Mann Magazine was pleased to receive several letters in reaction to the Fall 2009 issue on humor at Horace Mann. The cover of the magazine was drawn for the issue by noted cartoonist David Sipress ’64. One letter writer, Daniel Warner ’64, remembered an example of his classmate’s sense of humor from over 30 years ago. Dr. Warner, Director of the Centre for International Governance, The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, wrote from overseas to invite alumni to offer their own candidates for best one-liner from their days at Horace Mann. Sounds like a fun idea, and we’ll be happy to feature your contributions in future issues. Game on! In the meantime, if you loved the drawing by Sipress, you can order a copy through www.cartoonbank.com. Please convey my thanks and appreciation for an excellent and perceptive analysis of my “struff” to whomever wrote the précis Everybody seems afraid of poetry but even a ho-hum student like me manages to say something in poetic genre that is of interest on occasion while looking silly as an 81-year-old throwing the javelin in Senior Olympics. Samuel Messiter ’46 Dear Alumni House and Development Office: Roy Salomon ’55 sent news that is included in Class Notes for the Class of 1955. We excerpt his letter here, and refer you to pp. 54 for his update. I read with interest the Fall 2009 Magazine. I would like to propose a story for the greatest one liner in HM history. The Class of 1964 spent a considerable part of a year reading Melville’s Moby Dick. We went to whaling museums and read relevant passages in the Bible. At the same time, we were required to take public speaking and give a presentation in front of the entire school. For his speech, David “Si” Sipress came on stage with a phone and began talking about the role of the telephone in history. He then said that one of the greatest American novels began with a phone call, and recited “Call me, Ishmael.” The pause was just phenomenal and the auditorium erupted in laughter and applause. I can still remember that line many years later. This is my suggestion for the funniest one liner in HM history. Let the contest begin. Best regards, Daniel Warner ’64 Thank you for the update regarding Horace Mann Magazine. I was tempted to write some time ago when I read the issue concerning alumni in sports since I have been very active as a volunteer and participant since graduating from HM in 1955. Perhaps my classmates, who I was very happy to see at our 50th reunion might be interested in… (sic.) this news. Whenever (very seldom) I send out info like this I feel a little egomaniacal. On the other hand, not to say anything is a poor alternative. Best regards, Roy Salomon ’55 Just wanted to congratulate you on the great job you’re doing with the alumni magazine. A pleasure to read! Thank you for keeping many pleasant memories alive and updating us all on the amazing HM community! All the best, Elisabeth Sperling Enclosed you will find a copy of Skiing Heritage, June 2006. This magazine is published quarterly by the International Skiing History Association, of which I am a life member. The relevance to HM is as follows: On page 32 you will find an article on Timberline Lodge, Oregon, one of the oldest and most famous ski ventures in the U.S. At the end of the article, on page 36, is a glowing memorial tribute to Dick (Richard) Kohnstamm ’44, who played a critical role in guiding Timberline through financial crisis and led it to even greater prominence under his ownership. I’m not aware that Dick’s contribution to American skiing has been brought to the attention of the HM community. May I suggest that you consider his story for coverage in a future issue of the alumni magazine. Sincerely, Joel M. Fairman ’46 Horace Mann Magazine thanks Joel Fairman for bringing to our attention the legacy of Richard Kohnstamm, who passed away in 2006. While his first love was skiing, his work at Timberline Lodge also benefited the environment in this country’s far Northwest. We reference him on page 16. Thanks for showcasing books written by graduates. For me, it is a nice link to the school that taught me how to write and think in the first place. Over the years talking with patients, I have developed a love for the interaction of brain and mind and how that interaction affects the body. I have tried to capture that in this book on stress. I do hope that you find it relaxing. Yours truly, Stephen A. Schacher, M.D. ’57 Dr. Schacher referred to his book Calm, which is included in the “Bookshelf” section of Horace Mann Magazine, on p. 49 2 Horace Mann Magazine Spring 2010 http://www.cartoonbank.com
