alumni news Horace Mann School Alumni Gather in Record Numbers for Various Events H orace Mann School alumni are connecting as never before, thanks to a new series of events that joined the list of gatherings traditional to the HM alumni calendar. In addition, the activities in which alumni participated this year reached out to HMers of different ages and interests. The fall of 2010 saw alumni coming together for such traditional annual gatherings as Homecoming and reunions. It also brought out a crowd to cheer on Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez ’05 in his NY major league debut, when the Pirates played the Mets at Citifield. Alumni joined in saluting HMers who are veterans of this country’s armed forces when the Alumni House and Development Office organized a first-ever dinner commemorating Veterans Day in November 2010. HM Director of Alumni Relations Greg Zuroski also traveled to college campuses to visit young alumni undergrads and graduate students at several universities, bringing them greetings from their alma mater. Before the winter holidays Zuroski traveled to Yale and Cornell, treating the alumni to dinner at local college-style restaurants, and brought them a taste of HM—with hot-off-the-press editions of The Record, and small bags of speciallybaked cookies that are favorites among HM students. Zuroski joined the Alumni House and Development Office in the summer of 2010, and has been organizing these and other events in response to alumni requests. Alumni started 2011 off in style and tradition with the Alumni Council’s (HMAC) annual winter celebration. Held this year on January 27, 2011 the party began at the tail end of a storm that piled snow onto New York City’s streets, resulting in a snow day for students at Horace Mann. The weather didn’t deter over 60 alumni from classes from the 1950s through 2006 from grabbing the opportunity to come in from the cold and enjoy conversation, along with delicious hot bar-style fare and drinks at The East Wing on E. 76th Street, the private party room of The Stumble Inn, one of six popular Manhattan restaurant bars owned by Michael Asch ’87. February saw over 200 alumni, their friends and family members, along with Horace Mann School faculty, heading to the theater to enjoy a Sunday matinee performance of “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark” on Broadway. Anita LaScala 2001, the play’s first assistant set designer, worked with the Alumni House and Development Office in organizing the theater outing. Spring 2011 brought alumni together for regional reunions in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Alumni from older classes enjoyed a special evening together. At the end of March Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly traveled to California, along with members of the Alumni House and Development Office and the Horace Mann School administration, to visit with alumni living on the West Coast, and update them on news of their school. A special treat for alumni at the San Francisco reunion was the chance to visit with former HM faculty member Tek Young Lin who joined the gathering. The following week, on April 7, 2011 alumni and their guests got together at the Columbia Club for a first-ever Golden Alumni gathering of alumni whose classes have already celebrated 50th anniversaries. In April HM hosted its first Golden Alumni evening. Alumni studying at Cornell met with Alumni Relations Director HM alumni gathered at a Young Alumni cocktail party Greg Zuroski. in Manhattan’s Gaslight bar. 36 Horace Mann Magazine Spring 2011
