Any excuse she has to bring it up, she will!” 1937 celebrated the 92 Music lovers Marsha Hunt was honored with The New York Women in Film & Television’s (NYWIFT) fifth annual Loreen Arbus Award for “Those Who Take Action and Effect Change” in recognition of the 93-year-old actor’s contributions as a lifelong humanitarian and social activist. Hunt traveled from her home in California to N.Y. to receive the award at a luncheon on Dec. 8, 2010 honoring her and other women in film and television. Hunt’s moving speech drew the most enthusiastic response of the day from the audience of 1,000 members of the New York film, television and digital media industries. Wrote one audience member “The gifted performer has been an activist for innumerable causes for nearly seven decades. As she asked the awestruck crowd to ‘slow down’ and shared her pleasure at being able to come back to New York City for a ‘final visit’ and the joy she felt admiring the Rockefeller Center tree, the room of often cynical New Yorkers was brought to tears.” Hunt is the subject of “Sweet Adversity” a documentary being made by Roger Memos. David Schaefer, a retired George Mason University professor, is a founder of this international organization of Carroll admirers. His enthusiasm for Lewis Carroll and the author’s continuing impact on our culture was instilled by his mother, who received a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1896. When the Schaeffers came across a copy of The Real Alice in Wonderland, a Role Model for the Ages published by Gabriella Rubin ’10 and her mother Cathy Rubin, they were delighted to learn that the book was inspired by a Book Day at Horace Mann. The couple connected with Cathy Rubin (pictured with the Schaeffers) in November 2010, when the author was invited to speak at the LCSNA’s fall meeting. 1943 1946 of 1946 will celebrate its The Class 65th reunion during Homecoming Weekend on October 29, 2011. Samuel Messiter continues to wow us with his news. Says Sam, “At 82 I still compete in Senior Athletics, having David and Mary Dick Schaefer have kept their Horace Mann School connection strong for nearly 70 years. After dating as students at Horace Mann and The Horace Mann High School for Girls, each married others and lived fulfilling lives with their spouses who, unfortunately, both passed away. The two alums eventually reconnected, and married in 1999.
