Cover: The 2015-2016 Horace Mann School academic year included a celebration of the 50 th anniversary of HM's John Dorr Nature Laboratory in Washington, Conn. Over its half-century of enhancing the education of HM students "Dorr" has evolved in many ways. Visits to HM's Nursery and Lower Division classrooms by Dorr's faculty, and day trips and overnights at Dorr inspire in HM students, grades K-12, a knowledge and appreciation of nature. Dorr helps nurture in HM's younger students a sense of independence, and empowers students of all ages through its physical and intellectual challenges. Dorr is also where HM students deepen their sense of responsibility toward one another, and to the greater community, as they connect at "Dorrientations" for rising sixth-graders and for new students, and work together during HM's legendary eighth-grade Dorr. The John Dorr Nature Laboratory increasingly serves HM in many other ways. Contributing greatly to our curricular and co-curricular life Dorr provides a retreat space for various student organizations, a "classroom" for science students exploring the environment, and a "studio" where students in visual and performing arts classes can stretch their imaginations. The photograph on the cover of this issue of Horace Mann Magazine was taken by Alexander Wolfsohn '16 in the early morning during a "Photo Dorr" expedition to the Nature Laboratory, for advanced photography students. Photography is among the subjects taught as part of the Visual Arts discipline that is an essential aspect of a Horace Mann School education, from Nursery through the Upper Division. All students are exposed to photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital imagery and film production in their Middle Division and Upper Division years, through required classes and electives. A growing number of HM students continue on in the visual arts in the Upper Division, focusing on one or more of these disciplines through the Advanced Placement levels, and pursue art in college and beyond. 32 HM Homecoming 2015 draws thousands to campus and reunions 34 HMAC Honors 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Justice Milton A.
