NSA General Counsel Glenn Gerstell receives the oath
from Glenn Leuschner, Associate Director for Corporate
Leadership (l. to r.)
and was appointed as the General Counsel of
the National Security Agency. He was sworn
into office on Aug. 3, 2015 in a ceremony at the
agency's Fort Meade headquarters. A leading
legal expert in technology and cybersecurity
matters, he served for 18 years as the managing partner of Milbank's Washington, D.C.,
office, and previously led the firm's Singapore
and Hong Kong offices. Glenn has a strong
background in homeland security issues and a
record of public service. He recently served on

Chief, Central Security Service, said, "Glenn is
a gifted lawyer. His extensive background in
managing a global law firm and the breadth of
his international experience will provide a fresh
perspective that will serve to benefit our mission." Gerstell said he was extremely grateful
for the opportunity. "Given my lifelong interest
in homeland security and international matters,
it is an honor to be able to assist NSA in a mission that is now more vital than ever." https://

Classmate names appear in bold on first reference.
The Class of 1970 celebrated its 45th reunion in
New York on October 24, 2015. As he contacted
classmates while organizing the reunion Class
Correspondent and Class Agent Dr. Frank
Lowe gathered news updates presented here.
Following the reunion Dr. Lowe reached out to
classmates again, writing "Dear Friends: I am
so glad that the reunion was such a success.

The reunion and the emails have enhanced our
connections. For example (David) Wollins, Eric
Wachtel and Jeff Wachtel, (Ken) Flatto and
(Andrew) Ansorge had a five-way reconnect.
Hal Oringer was contacted by Dan Baldwin,
Steve Ross and Dan Klein. Jeff Fenster was
contacted by Jeff Wachtel and was reminded of
his parts in eighth and ninth grade plays they
were in together. As result of the reunion, I
decided to reach out to those who were MIA.
So far, I have spoken with (David) Apfel,
Ansorge, Fenster, (Phil) Blumberg and (Les)
Mitchell. Updates: Phil Blumberg wrote a long
letter in which he reported that he has been
living in the tiny mountain town of Mountainair,
N.M. (pop. 1,200) for 10 years. He is also
completing a novel Brooklyn's Glacier: An
American Fable. Apfel is still practicing law in
Boston. He is in frequent contact with Roger
Meltzer '69, Rich Barasch '71, and Robert
Rechtschaffen '68. Ansorge is still working at
Swann Galleries. He still attends 50-70 rock
concerts per year. Fenster is settling in LA. He
was very glad to hear from Jeff Wachtel. Les
Mitchell has been living in Naples, Fla. for about
10 years. After graduating Fordham Law
School, he had a 30-plus career with Xerox with
about 10 of those years in Florida. He is now
doing real estate for Caldwell Banker. He has
two children-his daughter is a recent college
graduate. Les still has frequent contact with
Lewis Jones. Jeff Wachtel wrote: "About two
years ago, my bosses created a new position at
NBC Universal's cable assets called "Chief
Content Officer" and I'm now the CCO. I'm in
charge of our scripted and unscripted studios
(Universal Cable Productions and Wilshire
Studios). We do around 17 series including
"Suits," "Royal Pains" and a really interesting
new show called "MR. ROBOT" (ask your kids)
(Horace Mann Magazine adds: A breakout hit!).
I also partner with our network presidents on
all content decisions. It's probably one of the
best jobs on the planet. On the family front, my
daughter Emily is at Tulane (loving it), my son
Jesse is at Campbell Hall High School, and my
amazing wife Sheryl continues to be the light of
my life." Fonzi (Alfonso) Thornton wrote that,
"After a summer (2015) of Aretha (Franklin)
dates and recording with Chic" he was in
Germany performing on Bryan Ferry's Autumn
(2015) Tour, and then returned to the studio
with Bryan Ferry recording new material. Ken
Flatto is doing consulting work in Connecticut.
He writes: "Family doing really well. My wife's
still teaching reading to middle schoolers.
Among our four kids, one is working at Fairfield
U., another at Swann in NYC (Swann Auction
Galleries), and another graduated from U
Michigan in 2016. Our oldest daughter, also
living in NYC, was honored "with an article in the
McGill University alumni magazine." Norman
Bloch wrote: "As an update for those of our
classmates who are interested, I still represent
companies and individuals in white collar
criminal matters as a partner in the New York
office of a 400-lawyer firm, Thompson Hine. I
am now in my 38th year of practice (the first 12
of which were as a State and federal criminal
prosecutor). My wife retired from the practice
of medicine. She is clamoring that I do the
same, but I am not quite ready. We have a
granddaughter, the child of our oldest daughter,
who, after graduating from Dartmouth and
Vanderbilt's medical school, is now an internal
medicine and pediatrics intern at UPMC in
Pittsburgh. She is married to a pediatric ICU
fellow also training at UPMC. Our granddaughter is the most photographed human being on
the planet. After graduating from Vanderbilt
and earning a master's degree from Harvard's
education school, our middle child is now a high
school guidance counselor at a public school
outside Boston. Our youngest child graduated
from Northeastern University in January. He
works outside Boston as an analyst writing
data-mining computer code to generate
reports for an international travel company and
its clients. My wife and I are ecstatic that we
have a grandchild, that all three of our children
are working and not living at home, and that we
are not receiving any more tuition bills. Hope to
be around for the next reunion. All the best,
Norman." Jonathan F.P. Rose wrote, "Dear
Frank and Friends, I have been reflecting on
your emails, updates of your lives. It seems that
we have a higher rate of stable marriages/
partnerships than many of our age, that our
children are mostly doing well, and that we are
living in comfort. How lucky we are. And, how
lucky I am. I have been married for 31 years,
and my family and I are healthy and happy. I
have three grandchildren from my older daughter, Ariel, who was a wonderful teacher before
her children, and is now on the boards of
several schools and organizations serving low
