Flaming Lips drummer/multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd gives some deliciously sketchy details about a film that he and Lipsmates Wayne Coyne and Michael Ivins are cooking up in Coyne’s backyard. With a handful of musical and filmmaking friends, they began the project the previous year, and Drozd is excited about its imminent completion. “2001 meets It’s a Wonderful Life meets Eraserhead ” he says. Dateline: November 2008. Flaming Lips frontman/creative sparkplug Wayne Coyne holds a copy of Christmas on Mars, the actual DVD/CD score package, soon to be commercially available. Seven years after beginning the project, Coyne is slightly dazed by the reality he and his friends created, likening it to our newly elected president and a certain rock hermit. “Not that the relief is as palpable as when Obama was elected, but it is a relief to know that it’s finally here,” The Flaming Lips shot new film Christmas on Mars with the same abandon that has always defined their musical approach by Brian Baker says Coyne with a laugh from his Oklahoma home. “It also comes as a great relief that I beat Axl Rose and Chinese Democracy by seven days or so. People make the comparison and I make the joke, but I’ve done three or four records in between, we’ve played shows every year, I’m a nice person. I like the epic titanicness of the comparison, but I don’t really think it’s fair.” In typically laissez faire Lips fashion, Coyne launched Christmas on Mars in 2001—coincidence?—without much regard for the project’s outcome. The success of 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots gave the Lips resources to further ramp up production, but diverted time away from the project with increased touring demands. Considering that the Lips shot the entire movie on self-constructed sets behind Coyne’s house and didn’t rely on label or studio money, it’s amazing it only took seven years. “No one stopped me,” says Coyne. “Whatever I wanted to do, I got to do it.
