monitorTHIS! - March 2009 - (Page 21) The Answer Everyday Demons SPV Every couple of years, a hipster-approved rock/ metal band emerges to annoy authentic metalheads to no end, whether it’s the Darkness, Bang Camaro, the Sword or Wolfmother. Despite sounding scarily similar to Zeppelin, Ireland’s the Answer are likely to escape the s*it-talk. We’re not kidding—it’s kind of terrifying how acutely vocalist Cormac Neeson and guitarist Paul Mahon conjure Plant and Page. See “Highwater or Hell” specifically. Call-to-arms first single “Get On Your Boots” evokes both Nancy Sinatra and President Obama, exemplifying why U2 still lord over the rock landscape (not to mention iPods and other mixed media). In Stores March 3 This Texas quintet has magically resided in the “next big thing” category over the last five years or so without anyone getting sick of them. Justin Furstenfeld has charisma to burn as their art-damaged voice, and the group somehow evokes everything from Peter Gabriel and Dave Matthews to the Strokes, yet never sounds forced. “Dirt Room” is an uncharacteristically taut and aggressive rant driven by Furstenfeld’s hoarse accusations. In Stores March 24 Lovely and talented indie queen Case returns with her follow-up to 2006’s acclaimed best-seller Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and does so with a slew of helping hands—M. Ward, Garth Hudson, Sarah Harmer, and members of the New Pornographers, Los Lobos, Calexico, the Sadies, Visqueen, the Lilys and Giant Sand. All of whom will combine to make Cyclone “bold and elemental” (duh), and perhaps spice up a Harry Nilsson cover. In Stores March 3 ou’ll noti c e that all the venues listed below regularly house basketball/hockey teams. Nickelback’s megahit “How You Remind Me” came out eight years ago. Yup, it’s safe to say that—despite every blogger in the world despising them—these dudes are not going away. Chad Kroeger simply gets how to connect with a vast swath of the rock-buying populace. We just wish they wouldn’t rely on the mid-tempo Bic-flickers so often. Kroeger and Ryan Peake can really riff up a storm when they apply themselves. date city venue date city venue Y NICKELBACK tour de force 3/2 3/3 3/5 3/6 3/8 3/9 Toronto, ON Hamilton, ON Worcester, MA East Rutherford, NJ Uncasville, CT Philadelphia, PA Air Canada Centre Copps Coliseum DCU Center Izod Center Mohegan Sun Arena The Wachovia Center 3/11 3/12 3/14 3/15 3/17 3/18 Columbus, OH Rosemont, IL Milwaukee, WI Moline, IL Omaha, NE Des Moines, IA Nationwide Arena Allstate Arena Bradley Center i wireless Center Qwest Center Omaha Wells Fargo Arena [ march 2009 + monitorthis! + 21 ]
