Record Store Day - April 2009 - (Page 16) games new video games in stores this month by Chris Dick Magnetic appeal e v e rs o f t ’ s A l a n F l o r e s, lead designer of Guitar Hero: Metallica, says Metallica are a nobrainer Guitar Hero band. We’d have to agree. With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, the thrash titans are, behind Black Sabbath, a household name. With 49 songs to play—tears will fall on new difficulty level Expert+—Guitar Hero: Metallica is the most complete Guitar Hero title yet. Flores jumps in the fire to answer our questions. Why Metallica? There were a few bands that came to mind. Metallica was one of those. They have a great, varied catalog. They have slow, ballad-y stuff like “The Unforgiven” and they have fast, thrashy stuff like “Fight Fire With Fire.” People presumably won’t get bored if they have the option to play all this cool stuff. Riff the lightning with Guitar Hero: Metallica N How involved were Metallica during the creative process? They were really involved in a lot of aspects. They came in and did motion capture for most of the songs. Lars [Ulrich] and James [Hetfield] did motion capture for every single song. Rob [Trujillo] and Kirk [Hammett] did motion capture for a bunch of songs. They gave us input on guest artists they wanted to appear in the game, venues they wanted to play in. They really wanted this game to be a true Metallica experience. What is the story arc? It’s based on this band that followed them around in Europe in a beat-up bus. They were looking for the opportunity to get on stage with Metallica. Metallica said their crew sort of adopted them. Then, at the end of the tour, Metallica let them get up on stage and open for them. It’s based on that fan perspective. [ 16 + monitorthis! + APRIL 2009 ]
