What else is new? At least director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and a surprising amount of duds) and friends took home a well-deserved eight statuettes for this crowd-pleaser. Hell, we’ll give screenwriter Simon Beaufoy special props for achieving what was once thought impossible—crafting a poignant, thrilling, romantic fairytale based on the dreck that is Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Well, not the Regis version that spawned a hundred more melodramatic stateside imitators, but the Indian edition. Protagonist Jamal (Dev Patel) blasts through question after question, arousing great suspicion from the police—it turns out that he’s a poor kid from a crappy neighborhood, so how could he possibly have all the answers? Well, under interrogation, Jamal gradually reveals the rollercoaster life experiences in the ghetto that shaped his expertise. It’s beautiful, smart storytelling.
